Help with piano placement
Shiro,
I don't mean to beat a dead horse.
But it looks like that piano would fit on the wall on the right!
if you put the edge of the tail right at the edge of the end of the wall on the right (last photo)
and the piano bench almost against the wall we are facing (i bet there is 3' from the end)
then the open part of the piano would face out into the expanse of the room.
(Just tell me to shut up) hehehehehehe

Do you mean the wall that's at the bottom in the mock-up photo? That wall is less than 7' long , and that placement would put the piano's tail in the doorway. Even if that wall was longer, I don't want that to be the view from the door, I want it to look nice when you look into the room, esp. since you can see into the room from the living room. And IMO, the best view of a grand is always the curve.
Also, putting the piano along that wall (right in the last photo, bottom wall in the mock-up) would mean the piano opens up to the window wall and I don't think that would be good acoustically....
Ithaca IIRC you don't like to move your piano at all yourself
You have a good memory. I definitely won't want to move it myself once it's in place. I'd be too scary of ripping the carpet or worse. Is your piano on caster cups?
Cheee, the indent of the bay window is only 4' but the carpet is 8', so where you see the curtains in the photo is as far as it can go. But if you draw a line in the doorway opening, that corner doesn't touch it at all, I think it doesn't look too bad.
cheeeeee How about angling the piano a little bit less (i.e., the left tip of the piano a bit away from the wall)? That may create a greater opening.
A greater opening where? I'm not sure I understand. I think I'm going to have the straight edge of the piano parallel to the opening, for acoustic reasons, but I suppose if it wasn't exactly parallel , that would create a little more room when you walk in... But I also want to make sure I can keep all four legs of the bench on the rug, so it will be a tricky placement.
I think the design you’ve come up with looks spot on - I say go for it! Can’t wait to see photos!
shawarma_bees Can’t wait to see photos!
Thank you Shawarma! I can't wait to move!!!
Thanks David! I’m pretty sure this is the placement I’ll go with. An added bonus to this placement, that you can’t see from the mock-up, is that you will be able to see the curve of the piano from the living room, and sitting like this, I will be able to see all the way to the back of the living room as well.
I’m going to ask the movers to be ready to try a few placements but this is he one I’ll start with and if it works, then that’s what I’ll go with.
I’m just getting to this thread. I haven’t read all the posts but I like either the one that’s just above this or
I don’t know how they’d differ acoustically, which I know is your main concern. But aesthetically, I like that in both, the piano opens into the room. I might make the decision on how much you want to be able to look out the windows while you’re playing. If the view is really nice, then I might go for the one where you can look toward the window. If the view is not great, I think I’d go for the one where you’re looking into the room.

We moved today and the piano is in! Yay!! I only played it just enough to check all the keys so I don’t have a sense of how it sounds yet. We’re exhausted from moving, so I’ll check it out tmrw. But here are some photos.

It looks great! I think you picked a great final placement and hopefully it sounds good in that spot!!
