Nightowl I had never heard of this composer before, but after hearing your lovely performance of that piece I'd like to hear more. You play beautifully - how long have you been playing?

Thank you! I had 2 years of lessons as a child. After a break of several decades, I bought a cheap digital piano in 2010 and tried to learn without a piano teacher. I took piano lessons for a few months in 2015, but had to stop due to time constraints. I have been practicing regularly since 2017, and until 2022 I had occasional lessons with my teacher, 2 to 3 times a year. Now I learn on my own.

You must feel pleased that you stuck with it and now your commitment is paying dividends.

I don't view myself as an advanced player. Considering that I wasn't a beginner seven years ago, I haven't made much progress. I prefer not to think much about the labels and just try to enjoy the process.

Nightowl I certainly don't remember playing that well after fourteen months!
For the most part your rhythm was rock solid, and the final chord was beautifully played.

iternabe Your playing is perfect! The lessons with @Seeker are certainly paying off. I especially liked the alternating fingers on the E. It makes a subtle, yet significant difference to the sound. Bravo, or should that be, Olé!

Rob - you noticed exactly what Peter Feuchtwanger told us in his master classes about how fingerings can make significant and subtle differences in the musical line. Sometimes we choose a finger that makes us take a little more time which give us an agogic accent without having to think about it.

hebele Greta99 thanks for sharing this composer. I immediately thought she must had an impressive life to get recognition in late romantic era. According to Wikipedia, Saint-Saens exclaimed "I never imagined a woman could write such music!". The piece itself was well played and quite pleasant to listen to, which I did a few times. Thanks.

When I read it for the first time, I was very moved. I now appreciate much more that I was always allowed to make my own decisions.

Calavera — Antipyretic - Commented over at PW. This time I looked up a definition for the title - I thought it referred to fire, but it is fever - fever-reducing. Clever!

WieWaldi — Frisco Blues - Another blues! Great, very laid-back like the other one - easy to listen to!

SalmonJack — Just Mist - Commented at PW. Still sounds (and looks) good!

BicBic — Mazurka Op.6 No.2 - Love the Mazurkas! But I don't get those people who obsess over just the right way to play them. Just have fun with it! I am learning op 24#1 for the Dance Music recital at PW in a couple of months. Well done!

Peyton Thank you so much, Peyton! I would love an electronic tuning hammer. I did buy a robotuner for my guitars once, a much older version of the Roadie... unfortunately it never worked that well.

Seeker Thanks a lot! Yes, I do agree that I should add some mics to capture more of the ambient sound. I'll have to experiment a bit and see what works! The pedal thumps are just the natural sound of the piano, but because I'm miking so closely, they get amplified... the reason you don't hear them is purely due to digital trickery on my part.

Nightowl Thank you. I tried to keep the right balance between the hands, bringing out either the melody or the accompaniment line when I thought it made sense, but probably should have worked more on it so as to control this aspect better.

Gooseberry It sounded good to me, this arrangement has a gentle charm and it's really just down to preference how much you choose to stress the melody. 🙂

@Rob Thanks, that is a great confidence boost, coming from such a skilled player. 🙂 Sometimes I wish I could watch historical videos of advanced players, recorded back in their early months/years of playing - it might be quite an eye opener to see flawed performances from people who play at advanced levels now. Conversely the opposite situation happens on YT, where there are numerous videos from people showing their progress "after 1 year" but they seem so advanced that it makes me 1) feel totally inadequate and/or 2) doubt the honesty/authenticity of the recording.
