Well, it's not hard to play, really. Not even for me ^_^ As you said, just plonk down a chord and do some not-too-hard stuff with the other hand.
Where I'm struggling is getting the chords into my muscle memory, so that I can make a smooth transition from one to the next. Right now I have learned two (of the five) variations, but I'm still having to think too long and too hard to get to the next chord, every single time. It's almost like a mental block. And reading them instead of playing from memory doesn't seem to make much of a difference, so I prefer to just learn them.
There is an upside though - because it's so hard for me to learn all those chords for the LH, it has left the RH free to wander around quite a bit, and I have come up with a few variations of my own. In fact I was inspired by @HeartKeys' recent recital for some of those ideas π So it's not all woe and misery π€£
Edit: I thought I had seen more of Christian's gospel tutorials! Turns out he has an entire channel devoted to it, if you're interested π
