WieWaldi rsl12 The playing speed is not the problem. But seriously, I just played through and measured the time. My watch stopped a 7:23 when I reached the 3rd page. Half the piece. I think I'll stop here and call it a day week. I won't be able to learn the entire piece.

So your arrangement is 6 pages long? OMG, there's no way I could manage that. Luckily my version is only 2 pages, there's no way I could cope with 1 page turn, let alone 2! But a Blue Blooded Bavarian can manage this stuff, while playing the piece in a casual manner as befits a Total Beginner. Anyway I'm sure half the piece will sound twice as impressive as anything a non Bavarian German would play. 😉

That is a very long version, even played slowly. I can only assume it has written out solos (or variations) in it, as the tune is quite straightforward. Basically it's 32 bars.

I'd pick another version. The Harry Likas one is a good one to use.

But if you've already put a lot of time and effort into it, ignore me!

Sophia I no longer assume I can judge a piece by just looking at it... and the most evil word on a piece or book is "Easy".

Never a truer word said. But it all depends on your experience - a grade 5 player would probably find many pieces easy that a BB would struggle with, and it seems that the books of "easy" pieces sometimes include pieces which are around grade 3 or 4, rather than the level we are used to. I'm in that awkward BB zone but from your recent vids I think you're playing at least one grade above me - trust those Musical Genes, they won't let you down!

Sophia Thanks but you missed a few words out. Easily done when someone has such a long formal title but we'd best do as we're told because Bavarian royalty can get very fussy about such things.

oooh, this will be an interesting one. i might do a version that sounds a bit hybrid between Yiruma's version and Bossa Nova type of style (or like Jesus Molina).

i don't play jazz, but i had been messing around with some jazz progressions, and this song had been one i'd played a lot!

For those beginners trying improv, the tonic blues scale works just fine over the entire song. (So if the key is C minor (3 flats), then you can play C Eb F F# G Bb.) Maybe you don't want to improv that way for the entire time, but a few bars will give a blues feel.

rsl12 okay I've incorporated a lot more than that at this point. I've been going very off-script (since that's all I do anyway) and meandering throughout that chord progression, lots of mashups came to mind.

I look forward to recording something in the coming weeks!

Another practice recording. annoyingly, Google Recorder has a tendency to clip off the beginning. I'm now studying Wynton Kelly's solo, so I've put off left-hand work for now. Listening to him, a lots of bebop "rules" are being refreshed. Whenever I analyze Wynton Kelly, I always think that the principles he follows are so simple and clear, but when I try to apply them they never work out so well for me! Anyways, the work continues!

rsl12 Well done. I like both your versions. Interesting, you changed the style from jazzy to jazzy. IMO, there is nothing of Pachelbel in either version. I think Sophia must have a trauma, hearing Canon in D everywhere. How come?

Very smooth rsl! Entirely different from the previous practice recording... this one is decidedly more jazzy and less Pachelbel 😃 How come the piano sounds so different? Did you use some other recording equipment?

Same piano, same phone! I'm glad that the style difference is so large it sounds like that major a change!

I think Google Recorder is only available on Pixel. It's an audio recorder app on my phone. It has nice features like automatically transcribing voices, and distinguishing between different speakers. But the fact that it misses the first few seconds of my recordings is very annoying!

Haha, Sophia and I are extra sensitive to a certain version of Canon. You are lucky that you cannot hear it!!

i should say i don't generally play jazz, or i.e., i have no background in jazz, and am not a jazz pianist. i did spend a big chunk this year though, listening to some cool Coltrane kind of music, and learning their progressions by ear. it's been a fun journey!
