WieWaldi In the past, if you sang along, the piano playing part was not the most challenging one. Different this time. Especially the fast walking bass line impressed me. I tried the poor man's version in the past and no matter how hard I tried, I struggled a lot. Yours is so effortlessly, so fast, played with a lot of fun.
This was definitely challenging, probably too challenging! Piano part is long with lots of non-repeating ideas, the singing style is something I'm not used to, and the accompaniment doesn't always cleanly match the singing pitches. Also, if it weren't for my daughter, I would never pick this song to learn. But she got a kick out of it!
Simonb I recently played "What' I Say" (Ray Charles) at a gig and wondered if this would be similar, as I didn't know the song/composition/composer.
Was it similar? What I Say is 12-bar blues changes, isn't it? I feel a different vibe from the two, but I could see how you could give the two a similar treatment.
Simonb My suspicion is that you and I have very similar tastes in non-classical Piano.
Maybe...? My jazz solos have never been very bluesy, and my blues knowledge is pretty limited! But New Orleans music is my focus for the next few months, so maybe by December we will be more similar!
Nightowl Wow, such a lot of work and skill evidenced here - you're quite the professional showman! There were some lovely licks and flourishes to your playing - you really are rather good at this stuff! You clearly enjoy singing and had a lot of fun performing this piece, but your voice does not seem quite right for this song (unlike the Modern Major General song where your vocals were awesome).
Thank you! Most of my prep time was spent figuring out the chords and the piano part, and if I were to continue working on this piece (which I am not!!! I only learned it for my daughter!) I would focus entirely on the singing, which I felt was very weak! Weak pitch, weak intonation, weak everything!
Nightowl PS: I wasn't familiar with this song so I just listened to the original score from the musical. IMO it's not a great song, but I actually prefer your version.
Aww, thanks! I think the Hamilton songs don't stand up well on their own. When seen in the context of the entire musical, they are much better. But on the other hand, this isn't one of my favorite songs either. It just happened to be the best song for a singing/piano performance. I guess you haven't seen it? You like musicals--I wonder how you would feel about this one--it's totally different from "Sound Of Music", but very good in a completely different (and unique) way! (Subtitles help--the rapping can go a little too fast to be understood. Also, a brief understanding of US history (1776-1800) helps too.) If you plan to see it, I found this primer article, summarizing the history you need to know.
Sophia You had me swinging, well I might have mentioned once or twice I might enjoy that type of music 🙂 Your singing is getting more and more elaborate, those were some huge jumps, it sounded really hard. And not only that, but you accompanied yourself at the same time, adding an entire new layer of complexity.
Well...I tried!!!
Sophia As a side note, it's funny that just today I watched a video about auto tuning and how it's changing "spontaneous" singing as we know it (this one, but he recorded a lot of them and they're all interesting).
How fun to watch the pitches visualized! Also, it is total ragebait for me--my daughter watches a lot of those youtube shorts, and it drives me up the wall!!
Sophia Obviously that's not what you are doing
WHAT??? YOU COULD TELL???? But also I didn't put in enough practice into the singing. Figuring out the piano part took too long, so my voice was neglected. But I'm done with singing for now. Now it's time to figure out the blues!!
