Eh - actually we have something for July: Beale Street Blues, right?

Looks like the calendar is like this, right now:

Jul: PIYW#1 (+ themed PW recital)
Aug: Quarterly recital
Sep: PIYW#2
Oct: PIYW#3 (+themed PW recital)
Nov: Quarterly recital
Dec: PIYW#4

Jan: PIYW#5 (+themed PW recital)
Feb: Quarterly recital
Mar: PIYW#6
Apr: PIYW#7 (+themed PW recital)
May: Quarterly recital
Jun: PIYW#8

(plan a PIYW every month that isn't a quarterly recital? And ignore the PW themed recitals?)

I can rename it "July". Originally I wasn't going to schedule a December event because of the holiday recital, but maybe we can pick a Christmas tune and do it anyways.

I'd enjoy that! I like having the focus of being given a specific piece.

Beale St is coming along ok, need to be able to play it cleaner before I record it but it's almost there 🙂

I totally missed the holiday recital.
Maybe leave it open and until then we see, how PIYW developed.

Are there already any suggestions for the follow ups?

We could also just pick a December tune, but have everyone submit to the holiday recital thread. So we could have the same kind of discussion we have here, but the actual performances would be combined with everyone else doing the holiday recital.

3 so far: WieWaldi, Sophia, and Twocats. I'm pretty sure I can submit mine before the 15th!

rsl12 maybe we should tag everyone who had expressed interest earlier to remind them to submit! I think so much time had passed that it had fallen off my radar.

twocats Actually, we have only two more candidates, so far:

Simonb I've printed off the lead sheet version and have started working on doing something with that.
What is the cut-off date for submissions?

pianocat I have accepted that I'm not making the June deadline... ... ...Going to try to get a recording of this piece by the end of July.

Maybe having some traffic alone in this thread is enough as a reminder. No need to tag each poster individually, like @diretonic. Others like @Nightowl or @rogerch are not participating, anyway.

Two others that I still have hope for are @tony_stride and @TC3 . They didn't commit, but maybe they'll have unexpected free time to do this. Anyways, July 15th isn't a real deadline (unless self-imposed), so I don't want them to think they have to rush or else not participate.

rsl12 Just saw your comment, not checking in as often lately. Thanks for the invite, but I have my hands full with my garage band lately, and it's all I can do to learn new tunes on bass and keys, much less practice my regular instructional materials, much less participate in recitals! I'll definitely keep an eye out for future ones, though.

I got the sheet music and played it through. I would love to participate but I’ve been super busy lately and didn’t have time to prepare. Maybe next time!

Well, apparently there is no deadline Roger 🙂 You can leave it till later and submit it any time you wish. But I agree with you, I'm really looking forward to all the performances! And I'm super impressed that some ventured out of their comfort zone and left strictly classical behind for a bluesy detour... respect 😁

If one can play classical, one can play blues, too. Blues is quite easy by comparison. But I am glad that some are taking a short trip into the world of blues, even though it is not their familiar genre.

Haha this would seem so, but it’s not necessarily true. I have heard skilled classical pianists try to play a blues song and it was absolutely awful. I agree that it’s almost always easier to play, but it’s also necessary to “feel” it. Ask me how I know this 🤣

Just found this video

and I instantly thought of this comment:

diretonic Apparently (I didn't know this) W C Handy referred to himself as the father or the blues and yet the score (original?) seems to play more like ragtime which ties in with him being something of a bridge between the two (I didn't know that either!).
