About participating though, there is this problem: I am too slow in learning new pieces.
On the one hand, just as your article says, I practise and I have practised a vast number of pieces at every level I’ve reached. I have never taken an exam, and I have never practised only six pieces at a certain level and then moved on. More like 50 pieces at each level, probably more.
On the other hand, as I said, I am too slow in learning new pieces. I now practise early intermediate pieces, and if I would need to learn 40 pieces in a year, I could only practise easier pieces. I like to interleave practising pieces at my level with an occasional piece that is easier, just to focus on technique, but to only play easier pieces is not appealing to me, at all.
So however much I would like to participate, I have never and will never play 40 pieces per year.
