PianoTell Recital #1

PianoTell's first recital will run synchronously with ABF Quarterly Recital #75 and go live on 15 August 2024.

Performances may be shared between the two recitals.

Upcoming Recital Announcement

  • The Recital Coordinators (RC) announce the next recital a month in advance.
  • This (single) announcement is posted to Notes, Recital Hall, Learners Lounge, Pianist Zone:
    • RC has special permission to cross-post to multiple forums.
    • The announcement is stickied for 7 days, and then unstickied.
    • Comments are open; participants can optionally pledge to play a piece, but all submissions are welcome.
    • RC can post a reminder every week on X number of weeks/days left before the next recital in this thread.
    • The announcement will be updated to include a link to the submission guidelines and template.
    • Once the Recital opens:
      • The announcement is updated to include a link to the Recital submission thread.
      • RC continues to use this announcement thread for updates and reminders.

Recital Opens for Submissions

  • One or two days before the recital opens on Piano World, the recital opens on PianoTell. This is to work out any bugs.
    • RC creates a new recital thread:
      • RC adds a special secondary tag to this post: Recital Submission Open
        • This tag allows participants to submit their performance on a first come first serve basis.
        • Only the participants and RC can see their submitted performances.
      • The recital thread is cross-posted to Notes, Recital Hall, Learners Lounge, PIanist Zone
      • The recital post is stickied.
      • RC keeps an eye on all submissions for outliers.
      • RC keeps us all updated and motivated on the announcement thread!

Recital Goes Live!

  • The tags from the old announcement thread are removed so that it only lives in Notes.
  • The recital submission period ends simultaneously with Piano World.
    • RC approves all the recital posts in the order they were submitted.
    • RC posts at the end of the thread to announce the recital!
    • RC removes the “Recital Submission Open” tag.
    • The thread is open for comments from everyone.
    • After 28 days, the thread is unstickied and the tags are removed so that the post only lives in Recital Hall.

Submission Template

  • Submissions can be video+audio or audio-only.
  • Submissions are self-hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, Google Drive, etc. (Anything else?)
  • The direct link needs to be posted so that the performance is embedded on PT.
  • Submitters are requested to keep their performances up for at least a period of 30 days and as long as possible after that.

Looks good. A kindly forum member might consider typing up a how-to sticky for folks who are new to using hosting sites, especially audio only (YouTube is pretty easy).

One tiny thing: is the comment policy going to be from a list (like at PW) or just free-form? I prefer the latter, as the PW list never quite had what I wanted to choose (something like "Honest but respectful critique: anything goes, but don't be rude or mean!").

    Enthusiastic but mediocre amateur.

      +1!

Great point. We can provide template answers, but in reality it's free-form... so we can do both! 🙂

So just a heads up here. I've run out of time but I will temporarily create a Recitals Hall so that the announcement and such can be unblocked.

I feel that the problem here is that adding Recital Hall to all the other forums basically pushes us over the edge in terms of having too many forums. We have a couple of options:

      • Remove/Hide forums such as Teachers Board and lesser used ones.
      • Collapse Recital Hall into Learner's Lounge or Member Recordings.
      • Do some design explorations and see if we can have our cake and eat it too:

Since I've run out of time to figure this out, I'm going to temporarily add Recital Hall at the end of the forum list, after Notes. This will buy us a little bit of time and then we can revisit this.

Thanks for all the diligence on making all these things happen.

Say hello to your @Recital Coordinators@Sophia and @Pallas!

Thank you both for volunteering to help make the PianoTell Quarterly Recitals a reality!

Other than the neat @ mention trick, members can also create discussions with the Recital Coordinators:

RC should have enough permissions to execute "Upcoming Recital Announcement" (see the initial post for details):

This (single) announcement is posted to Notes, Recital Hall, Learners Lounge, Pianist Zone:

To cross-post, when you start a discussion select the current Tag and make sure you select "Bypass tag requirements":

Then you can select multiple forums to post to. This only works on create. If you need to edit the tags after the post is already created, you will only be allowed to update it to a single forum.

The announcement is tag-stickied for 7 days, and then unstickied.

To Tag Sticky, this is what you'll need to do — don't worry about the note regarding "All Discussions":

I know some things are not going to work perfectly and there will be glitches. Let's not shoot for perfection for the initial announcement... I'll work with RCs to iron out the wrinkles!

Drop your feedback right here. 🙂

Seems like this is getting off its feet just in time. It looks like Sam’s been locked out of the ABF forum software, so he can’t open the ‘fast themed’ recital for submissions. TBD when/if this will get resolved.

Sgisela Seems like this is getting off its feet just in time.

Three cheers for navrinda and Sam 🙂 Pallas and I are still a fly on the wall when it comes to recitals and the discussion about recitals, but I'm sure it'll all pan out eventually 😃

          Pallas I'm a neutral party.

Definitely neutral party here as well 🙂 I also want to make crystal clear that I'm very happy to volunteer together with Pallas, but I can't guarantee that the future of P|T recitals will exactly match how things are done at PW. I'm just setting expectations here... especially now that PW is in a bit of a tight spot. I don't want to give the impression that we're able (or even willing) to take over 100% of what Sam did/does over there.

But I'm sure we'd be able to come up with something that's just as beautiful - just perhaps a little different. If that's acceptable, then we're looking forward to do our share in making it a bright recital future here at P|T 🙂

Sophia Pallas I'm a neutral party.

Definitely neutral party here as well 🙂

Blink twice if you need help! 🤨🤨

I see I missed the latest updates, definitely let me know if there's anything I can help with or tweak. Happy to help or accommodate in any way.

I'm not sure if you're coordinating with Sam, but will either of you be posting the 30-day heads up for the opening of the PianoTell Quarterly Recital #1?

Sgisela I'll probably just start participating in the recitals here. I don't see the point in submitting to two, or potentially 3 places if PianoClack decides to implement it. I saw a comment about that over at PW. Really don't have the bandwidth to track conversations in multiple places.

bSharp This is totally fine. You have to do what is right for you. If you do think that you’d participate in both if the dates were staggered, that might be helpful to know, but my feeling is that the issue of the timing of the recitals is not going to be the thing that massively changes participation. However, this is just my gut feeling, and if anyone feels otherwise, this may be good to know.

navindra The thread is open for comments from everyone.

If I understand correctly, each recital will be housed in a single discussion thread containing:

              • An introductory message from the Recital Coordinator (RC), followed by
              • Submissions from recital participants (which need to be submitted prior to the recital deadline), followed by
              • Comments from everyone

I think it's a good plan! Depending on how much time the RCs can dedicate, I think the following items would be nice to add to the introductory message, once the deadline has passed:

              • A playlist of all youtube submissions
              • A table of contents that can double as a template for comments. For example, if this thread were a recital, then:

              RECITAL SUBMISSIONS

navindra - I'm Running A Bit Behind (Chopin)
TC3 - Looks Good (Elton John)
HeartKeys - Thanks for All the Diligence (Prokofiev)

Users could then make comments by copying/pasting the above and then adding their comments:

navindra - I'm Running A Bit Behind (Chopin) You sound like you are on tempo and not behind at all!
TC3 - Looks Good (Elton John) You are looking good!
HeartKeys - Thanks for All the Diligence (Prokofiev) Sounds like a really hard piece that I would never be able to perform.

(EDIT: Is there any way to view the actual markup of a post? If I quote the "table of contents" in the usual manner, it doesn't come out properly).

rsl12 A playlist of all youtube submissions
A table of contents that can double as a template for comments. For example, if this thread were a recital, then:

Yes, these are great ideas. This definitely crossed my mind. The only challenge is that it would be manual work. It might be possible to automate some of it with a Flarum extension though.

Hilarious set of pieces btw. 😃

(EDIT: Is there any way to view the actual markup of a post? If I quote the "table of contents" in the usual manner, it doesn't come out properly).

Good question. Only if you Edit I think, which RCs will be able to do... but there may be another way of doing it that I haven't found yet. Would you believe I figured out how to do it for PW? 😃 This is how I originally mirrored all my content from PW to PT.

navindra Good question. Only if you Edit I think, which RCs will be able to do... but there may be another way of doing it that I haven't found yet.

The problem is that RCs wouldn't be the one making comments--it would be the other users. So other users trying to use my template would end up with this:

navindra - I'm Running A Bit Behind (Chopin) You sound like you are on tempo and not behind at all!
TC3 - Looks Good (Elton John) You are looking good!
HeartKeys - Thanks for All the Diligence (Prokofiev) Sounds like a really hard piece that I would never be able to perform.

This sort of works, but it's not as good.

Another possibility is for the RCs to mark the template as code, but then it doesn't serve its purpose as a "Table of Contents":

                  **@"navindra"#p9004 - I'm Running A Bit Behind (Chopin)**
**@"TC3"#p9051 - Looks Good (Elton John)**
**@"HeartKeys"#p9222 - Thanks for All the Diligence (Prokofiev)**

I guess RCs could post a "Table of Contents" and a "Comment template" separately, but hopefully there's a better solution.

                    9 days later

Is everything still on schedule for an August recital? I'm excited! (Also, I'm not totally prepared.)

                      rsl12 Yes! We're on for August 15th for PianoTell Recital #1. 🎉

I will take lead on coordinating the first recital. I expect to announce it on July 15th, ~30 days before the recital goes live.

I'm currently in Mauritius 🇲🇺, but I'm wondering if I could swing recording a performance in time? It's tough with all the 🌴 and 🏖️ distractions here! 😉

It would be pity to miss out... all performers will be receiving a digital keepsake for participating in the first P|T recital.🏆

Mauritius??? It sounds so remote. Do you have access to a piano?

Let me know if you need any help (though I'm sure the RCs will do a great job helping).
