Would you mind if recitals were open to non-beginners as well?

What are non-beginners?
Well, in the ABF recitals there are Tim Adrianson and Ted Jones, both with more than 70 years of experience. I can't tell you exactly what defines the upper limit. But if it is below 70 years, then you are definitely on the safe side, and you are allowed to contribute. 🙂

The thing I am scratching my head is the right place for the recitals:

Adult Beginner Forum

it is established
beginners know they are welcome
new people checking out ABF get notice about the recitals

Member Recordings

the name speaks for itself

I am not sure if Member Recordings would be a better place, honestly I doubt it. In MR forum there is one thread with a recording as starter post, followed by comments. The recitals are clumped into one thread and another one for discussion. So it is more like an event, and everybody who submitted is likely to listen to all pieces. Moderators could make the recital thread sticky to stand out, but still, I think it would get less noticed compared to ABF.

And I seriously doubt that the ABF (or Learners Lounge now) is best place for those recitals. Why not the Pianists zone, as someone suggested earlier? But seriously, if after all considerations the Learners Lounge is truly the absolute best place for the recitals then let them be there.

WieWaldi I'm wondering why not make a forum of it's own: PianoTell Recitals, right on the Home page. One-stop shopping, the forum itself has explanatory text to explain who is invited to recitals (everyone!).

Seriously, I think we should start a new thread for this question, as there are too many questions to be answered.

Rubens I think the recitals could be posted in the members recordings forum then! After all they do consist of recorded performances.

I agree. When it's in the members recordings area it's clear that everyone can join.

I'm very sorry, Josephine, for getting the threads mixed up. I thought this thread was about the theoretical PT recitals, but now I suspect it's not. I'm waiting for clarification.

Rubens Thank you for clarifying. None of my comments posted here on PianoTell, including those in this thread, are intended to focus on PW, only on PT. If I resume posting on PW, none of those comments over there will be about PianoTell. I want to make sure it's clear to @Sam and anyone else reading my comments in the various recital threads what my intentions are.

The point of participating in a recital is not to proof you're the greatest pianist in the world. I don't need to compare my playing to other people as long as my piece is original enough at any level.

I don't like competitions where you classify people by age groups or other criteria than levels of playing. A while ago the main broadcast station CBC in Canada hosted a Classical piano online competition 2 years in a row. Each contestant would submit a video of their playing on an acoustic piano (no DP). The top contestants would receive a prize and the #1 would get the chance to play with the Toronto Symphony. Listening to the performers, there are people playing advance pieces flawlessly and students still trying to perfect "Minuet in G" from the Bach "Notebook for Anna M". Going by the pieces they submitted, anything at a lower intermediate level would not make it to the top 5.

In a recital we want variety. In a competition if we allow people who plays "Mary Had a Little Lamb" to enter, we should have an absolute beginner category so that those at a very low level can still win prizes. We don't want someone playing an early Mozart Minuet to be next to someone playing Liszt "La Campanella" because the latter piece is much more advance.

Well this is yet another reason why I created that thread, essentially asking if everybody was really ok with having advanced learners participate in the ABF recitals. But then somebody seemed offended by the question, basically asking me how I could even think that advanced pianists would feel uncomfortable participating in those recitals. I know I would feel uncomfortable submitting La Campanella in a recital where another pianist would submit an early Mozart minuet or Mary had a Little Lamb, but maybe that's just me.

Everyone was a beginner at some point.
