lilypad It doesn't always work for me because my sections are too long, but I try to play each section without mistakes for 3 sets of 3 repetitions, with a 10-second rest between each repetition before believing I've learned it. I'm not a big fan of "just keep playing the whole piece over and over and praying for rain." If I use the 3x3x3 starting with the hardest sections first, I can learn quickly enough not to get burned out on it. It also helps me actually play it without mistakes in the lesson, too, if I do my 3x3x3 in random ordered sections. Bomb proofing! Before I started using this method, it would take all dang day to get a clean recording of a piece. Doing it this way, it's eventually just plop in front of the camera and get it in 1-3 takes. Saves my body from overuse.
I know I'm over-selling it. It's from the Dr. G book. I don't think she does 9 repetitions. I think she does 6. But my brain needs more time. A lot more time.
Note that I always need several rounds of the method per section, so it's not accurate to say I'm asking myself to learn it in one. But if I'm sitting there for an hour trying to get 9 in a row without a mistake, I'm wasting my time and should create a smaller section to isolate the problem. As with everything, mileage varies from person to person I'm sure.
