Hi all,

Has someone ever tried ruby/garnet shellac on black stained wood without tinting the mixture? I'm curious about the effect.

Josephine Interesting question. Unfortunately I only keep standard French, button polish and clear sanding sealer in my workshop.

The former owners painted my upright white, and I removing it. The lacker they used is almost impossible to remove with a sander so I'm using a chemical paint stripper. I started last summer but it started raining in July and didn't stop raining until this month (climate change?) and I'm doing this outside so I'm not even half way yet.
So I have time to try multiple things on some pieces of wood first.

There are some carvings of flowers in the front panel. I want to paint those carvings with gold paint, so I also want to try what it looks like when I apply ruby shellac over gold colored paint.

Josephine Where I live on the west coast of the UK the annual rain seasons starts in mid mid July and always continues to the following Spring. With respect to finishing timber I like to watch the Gilboys YouTube videos for tradional methods of wood treatment and also restoration of finish.

Oops I made a lot of mistakes in my post and I don't know how to edit it. I meant lacquer.

I'm going to look for the videos of the Gilboys, thanks!
