Hi Tre,
I live in Carmichael, not very far from Sacramento which is in Northern California. The wild fire is only in Southern California. Obviously here in the North we worry a lot for the people of the South and many are trying to help with donations of all kinds.
I am glad that you finally can see my piano. It is much easier to post pictures here than at PW.
Nice to talk to you again.

Thank you for tagging Navindra for me. He did help me change my name.

a month later

Well, Iā€™ve finally joined the acoustic squad. For years, I couldnā€™t have an acoustic because of rules in my living space, but thatā€™s changed. So, it was time:

Itā€™s a Young Chang. This wouldnā€™t have been my first choice, but being back in school for a degree, surviving off arts grants and commissions, and having shot credit thatā€™s still on the mend after it went to pots when I was sick a few years ago means there werenā€™t that many options. Anything I bought had to be paid for up-front. šŸ˜‚ So I had to go with what I could afford. But Iā€™m happy with it.

This was a used model thatā€™s been fairly well maintained over the years, but I can tell it will need a tiny bit of tender loving care in some areas. Just got it tuned (and waiting the few weeks for it to ā€œsettle inā€ was painful, lol). Tuning pins are in great condition. Sound board is in great condition. Sustain and sostenuto pedal are good, but Mr. Una Corda will need a regulation.

Action overall is ok, but it will need a lubrication and a regulation to get it to full playing capability.

Overall, after a few months and a few procedures to get it back to its best, itā€™ll be a nice workhorse practice instrument.

So, YAY!

Wonderful, congratulations!!!!! There's nothing better than an acoustic piano, and an acoustic grand even more so!

Taushi I had to go with what I could afford

That's the very best kind of piano to buy!

      Taushi

Your music room is really cool with the artwork, etc. What's the inspiration behind it?

        ShiroKuro

Thank you!!! Iā€™m really happy with it. Hopefully, by the summer time Iā€™ll have everything done. Iā€™ve found a really good tuner/regulator/technician. He kinda does it all, and thatā€™s make it much easier to get everything together!

        Thanks much!

The inspiration is those old opulent rooms you see in European castles, wealthy homes, and universities. Those beautiful rooms with wood paneling (which unfortunately, I canā€™t put up because my landlord would beat me, lol) and paintings on the wall, and banners and curtains and Persian/Oriental rugs, etc. I love those rooms.

I live in a big city, so the view from th window of my art room is justā€¦the brick exterior of another building and their windows. I can see the trees and streetā€¦but only if Iā€™m in a corner of the room basically, lol.

So, since I use this room both for piano and for writing, I figured Iā€™d try to spruce it up. Iā€™ve been get some nice landscape paintings; paintings of beautiful places Iā€™d like to see instead of the concrete jungle of the city, lol.

Iā€™ve been collecting and decorating the room for about six or seven years now, collecting paintings and decorative pieces and just adding stuff:

This is how it started, with my Yamaha CLP-785:

I liked the picture of my favorite artists, but got tired of the reflections and moved to more paintings over time. Added a better rug and some curtains around the room:

        More recent, with my Casio:

Now with the grand, and full curtains for sound proofing:

The other side of the room by the way, is boring a plain with an ugly couch that I need to replace and the window and a bookshelf. šŸ˜‚

          Taushi I love it!!

Looks great Taushi ! Are you set up to record your new piano? I'd love to hear you play it!

Taushi Congratulations! You've truly explored and analyzed the world of digital and virtual pianos to the greatest of depths. It's really great to see you with your own acoustic now, especially with the all the skill and talent that you have!

rogerch Looks great Taushi ! Are you set up to record your new piano? I'd love to hear you play it!

I tossed off a bit of my favorite demonstration piece that anybody familiar with my post will be know by now, ad nauseam šŸ˜‚ ā€¦the Scriabin Etude Op 2, No 1.

It ainā€™t the prettiest sounding piano, by far, lol - Iā€™ve got to address the sustain & una corda pedal noise, voice the hammers, and the action needs a regulation.

But, for a practice piano, itā€™ll do.

Iā€™ve also learned that thereā€™s a whole new world of study I have to delve into - how to properly record a piano. šŸ˜‚ Tried my best with my phone.

                I think it sounds great!!

Taushi The piano and your expert playing both sound lovely to my ears!

                Hi

Well I finally moved house (to a detached place) last month and now own my first ever acoustic Piano:

A Yamaha B3, with the chrome finish. Ā£4995 for those interested.

Lovely sound and feel, and a dream come true for me.

                Cheers

Simonb Very nice indeed. What is the availability of piano tuners like in your area?

                  Hi keff

I'm not sure, however I know a local one, as he tunes for my Piano Teacher. And indeed my purchase was at least partially based on a discussion I had with him, as he also sells Pianos.

My Teacher has a Yamaha Grand, and an upright, and whilst her upright is a better model than my B3, I think the sound and feel is pretty close to what I'm used to when I have lessons. And the B3 is a considerable improvement on my old Casio PX S3000 (which served me really well), and has been sold to a friend.

                  Cheers

Simonb Just before my piano teacher retired she bought a smaller house and traded in her Yam grand for a B3.

My long standing tuner also retired this year but we have been fortunate for new tuner arriving in the area. I do keep wondering if I should acquire a digital such as a Kawai CA901 so that I have something that never goes out of perfect tune. A CA901 would be good if I were to start a mini piano group in my home.

                    Enjoy your new acoustic piano.
