Gearing up for Recital

Can you tell I’m serious? Today I learned how to use my iPhone w/ “continuity camera” on the Mac AND that I can use my audio interface (Apogee Duet) for audio AND record in QuickTime. I haven’t done it … yet. Still scared! And working on improving my left hand dynamics. Just so I don’t scare you, this is what you have to look at.

ShiroKuro My Android's native app is clearly geared to voice rather than music, and not at all adjustable. That's my I went hunting for something else. Again, no idea about iPhone -- though I plan to switch over to one the next time I'm in the market for a phone.

Ahh, interesting. I'm going to look online and see what I can find out about the iPhone. I might be upgrading soon, and I am happy enough with the recording quality now, but there is so much more voice-emphasis now, I would hate to discover I ended up with worse results!

Certainly modern Android and iOS phones have much more sophisticated auto level software than cheap cassette recorders of years ago. Nonetheless, there is a tendency to pull the recording level to the mean that's noticeable, especially if you're playing music that has a lot of extremes in volume.

FWIW, iPads seem to have a manually adjustable recording level (accessible in applications such as garageband, anyway) rather than relying on an auto level mechanism. From experience I know that the "iPad Pro" models, in any case have good quality internal microphones. So for audio recordings, anyway, that's an option. I don't know whether the iPad video recording software is designed the same way. Probably not, unless it's professional level.

pseudonym58 i know there are people who record or take photos with their iPads, but I have never understood the concept of a camera on an iPad. The device is just too big. I’ve had one model of iPad or other since probably 2011 and I’ve maybe used the camera on one of them twice. I suppose if you had a massive tripod for it…

Anyway, it wouldn’t work for me because I use my iPad to display the score and I don’t know if the app allows you to record video in the background with a different app running in the foreground, but it doesn’t sound like a good set up.

I’m stuck with my iPhone for now. 😅

Subject to change. If Roland comes out with a PHA-50 88 key midi-controller keyboard without the gaudy control panel that the A88-MKII has, I’ll line up to purchase it. As it is, the MKII has the same PHA-4 keyboard my current A88 has, and MIDI 2.0 ??? meh.

Or if Kawai comes out with a VPC-2...

Well, it’s done and submitted. I’m 1000% happy with the way the gear performed. The human is another story.

Next time, less tinkering, more practicing.

In one take, upon review I noticed a visible/audible glitch that was caused by notifications coming into either my computer/iphone.

I turned the phone and the Mac’s Focus to ‘Do Not Disturb’ on both and it didn’t happen again. Before the next time, I need to clear off the apps allowed to break through on Do Not Disturb to be extra certain.

Those of you using an iPhone as video & recorder likely would have instantly noticed and stopped for a retake.

TulipAcid re the glitch, whenever I record, I always put my phone into airplane mode because I don’t want any notifications coming in. I don’t usually have “phone-internal” notifications, like a calendar notification, but if I did, I believe a calendar notification would also create a glitch.

That’s REALLY smart!

With the wildlife around my house, my Blink app is CONSTANTLY going off!

I don’t know if ‘continuity camera’ would work in a wired fashion to the computer in my use case. I should find out, then I too could use airplane mode/shut down wi-fi on the computer…I think it uses bluetooth anyway, so even the cable wouldn’t be necessary…?

In theory, a properly configured Do Not Disturb Focus should work…I truly have WAY TOO MANY ACTIVE NOTIFICATIONS on my Mac computer and iphone apps.

Another learning … I should have saved my iMovie project in something higher than SD 400K. The audio still sounds good.

Also, for those in the audience, if you’re using virtual instruments with iLOK bear in mind turning off wi-fi on your computer will likely prevent their use unless you have the iLOK USB dongle and those instruments activated for the dongle…perhaps they will continue to work if you open up your DAW/Standalone app before going off wifi, I don’t know. I’ll try it sometime and report back!!!

In theory... but in practice, I find that the DND setting is often "broken" (disturbed) by various things. 😑

I also wish I could get my weather app to notify me only when there's a tornado warning. I do not need a bleep every time it wants to tell me "expect rain tomorrow" 😠
