twocats That's a pretty good way to learn improv vocabulary actually! Decide what you like and where you like it, and plan your way though. Largely, that's what I'm doing right now. After planning through several tunes it becomes part of your improv arsenal.
The other thing I'm doing is taking a ornamentation technique and trying to use it everywhere, just to get a sense of where it's possible and where it might sound good, so that if inspiration strikes me, I can add it more spontaneously.
But I'm not going too crazy with it. In the top post, I like what pianist did -- just a few changes on each repeat to give a little surprise and color.
