But I would say it probably isn't as hard as it looks (assuming you have no trouble with tenths). Everything fits under the fingers pretty comfortably. (Except the tenths!)

ShiroKuro oooh thank you!!! I’m watching Animenz’s version, I think I see the parts you skipped. (Middle and end, right?) I think I will have to skip those parts too! Yikes! But I don’t think it would have occurred to me to get the score and just skip that part! 😅 But hearing your version really shows how to make the piece more manageable. It still retain the lovely and compelling aspects of it.

Correct, I skipped the middle section after the first iteration of the chorus, as well as the dramatic outpouring at the end. It wasn't that clever really, I largely borrowed the idea from the (admittedly even shorter) version of the song which is featured in the anime. Feel free to PM me if you need help bastardizing, um, streamlining the arrangement!

raagamuffin Technically it took me about 7 months from when I first started learning the Debussy piece to recording it, but it's not like I was practicing it daily, or even regularly. I tend to juggle at least half a dozen pieces at any one time, and this was more of a long-term project. Within those 7 months, I practiced the Debussy piece on 38 separate days. I learned the notes, then I would revisit the piece every now and then. This culminated in a two-week stretch where I developed the piece almost every day, until I felt I was ready to record it.

Thanks for your notes on the timeframes. It's a good ballpark for me to work off of. I'm often disappointed at how long it takes (for me) to read sheet music and convert it into a note on the piano with the right emphasis. And then to become proficient at combining it all to sound melodious.
So it was nice to see that it is not as automatic as I'd envisioned (someone gives you a piece of sheet music and within a few minutes you start playing it) 🙂

WieWaldi - You played Kansas City Blues like it was easy, but that arrangement looked and sounded anything but easy. Lots of variations and playing in different registers. I think you've acquired some serious blues chops.

Sophia - Minuet from Don Giovanni - That sounded good. I've played some easy looking pieces in beginner John Thompson books and been surprised when they turn out to be not so easy.

Simonb When it comes to more advanced players I have the reverse problem. Again I'm not a Teacher, but is what I'm hearing an interpretation or a mistake? Over on PW there are threads that go on forever debating this sort of thing. Music is very subjective.

I think many things in a classical performances can be clearly called a mistake. I've probably been to at least 100 master classes, and even though the students are usually top conservatory students, many of the things the teachers point out to these students are clearly mistakes in musical understanding, i.e. things that are not really open to debate that any reasonable person would agree with. Of course, some of the things the teachers mention are less objective interpretive ideas, and many of the master class teachers preference those ideas with comments that make it clear these comments fall into the category of interpretive suggestions.

And the majority of reasonable people (myself included) wouldn't hear that level of subtlety. I might if I was watching a video of the teacher with a student, and could hear and/or see the difference, but if I was just listening to an audio recording (of the student) I suspect I'd never realise.

I take your point, but you make it sound as though the majority of ALL people hear music at a very high interpretive level; and they simply don't.

I don't really follow what you're trying to say. I don't think what the majority of people hear has anything to do with the fact that many things pointed out in a master class are clearly musical errors and cannot be classified as a valid "interpretation". A good master class teacher will explain to the student why he thinks what they did was wrong so they understand the musical principle involved and hopefully do not make the same mistake in the future.

You replied and quoted my post that I found commenting critically on advanced players performances difficult. In 'answer' you talked about conservatory students and Teachers in masterclasses. I assumed you were trying to make some sort of link.

If there's no link, which based on your last reply there doesn't appear to be, then clearly your 'answer' could have been better worded. My psychic powers were at a low ebb yesterday.

Simonb In the first post of yours that I quoted you said music is very subjective so for advanced pianists it's difficult to decide whether something is mistake or a valid interpretive decision. My reply to that was trying to say music may not be as subjective as you think. That's why I particularly chose the example of a master class with conservatory students(the advanced pianists you spoke of) to illustrate that even pianists at that level make objective mistakes quite frequently.

I see, fair enough. Everyone makes mistakes, of that there is no doubt.

That said I do believe music is very subjective; and it doesn't change the fact that I don't feel qualified to comment, or more accurately criticise, advanced players. And in fairness to myself, that may be because they are playing music I've never heard before. My knowledge of 'classical' repertoire, is, I admit quite limited.

I have noticed though, that you and I seem to agree on what constitutes a good Piano performance based on some recent submissions here, and over on PW.

So we agree on something!

navindra Thanks Nav, appreciate your kind words. 💕 Good to know, the dynamics could be stronger - I'll keep this in my sleeve for the next pieces. I never had a piano teacher face to face or screen to screen. I am just following a YouTube channel. Someone who is building up blues piano from the scratch, constantly increasing the difficulty, and keeping a certain direction for learning. I think, this works pretty well. Definitely better than watching a tutorial from A, then something complete unrelated from B, and after that something from C with a difficulty level either too easy or too hard.
