Inspirational performance of this monster of a sonata. And with such a level of detail through each movement.
I get a very Dostoevksy feeling from this piece. I've listened to this sonata many times but never got a connection between the Russia's great piano music and its literature but this piece really portrays the raw drama of these heroes' inner worlds. The syncopated part early on is like Rasolnikov or that really messed up Karamazov brother tottering away in a downward spiral. Great playing.
I feel like I can hear/see parts of these sagas throughout the sonata like the part of the 2nd movement with those RH descending runs is like Alyosha and Lize diverging away from love.
And I heard many things I've not heard in many recordings or live performances of this sonata at the last few Van Cliburns. Your ideas really work. (I know this is a less recorded version but I mean in parts Rachmaninoff kept throughout the versions, you still have a lot of unique details).
The score for the original version looks more difficult than the revised or horowitz versions, did you learn it after learning a lot of other Rach pieces?
