For Play 'Beale Street Blues' Your Way, I studied a small portion of a video I've been wanting to study for a long time: Doctor John Teaches New Orleans Piano. I live in Baton Rouge, and I've been wanting to get more of the fabulous, funky, and sweet Louisiana sound in my playing. PIYW is now over and I might as well continue what I started!
In the video, Doctor John goes through a number of songs, with the camera helpfully pointing at his fingers. I used big parts of the first song (Frankie and Johnnie) in my prep of Beale Street Blues, so I now move to the second tune. But here I must confront a major weakness of mine. The tune is "C. C. Rider", a barrelhouse blues that features tenths in the left hand. I've worked on stretching my left hand for 10ths several times in the past, and I usually give up after a few months. But I love the sound of 10ths so much I'm going to try again! Here's me trying a few measures of C. C. Rider:
I know I could roll these 10ths but I'm going to try stretching until I can at least reach the white key tenths with some faculty. But because it's going to take months, I'll probably work on something else in the video at the same time. Maybe go back to Frankie and Johnny and see if I can get comfortable enough to actually improvise in that style. Anyways, here marks the beginning of my New Orleans music project!
