Continuing my covers of favorite songs. This is from L. Cohen's album “Love and Hate”. I love it on many fronts but one is the message of forgiveness and love. The lines “And if you ever come by here for Jane or for me. Your enemy is sleeping and his woman is free. And thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes. I thought it was there for good so I never tried..” just killed me the very first time I heard it. Anyway, hope you all like it.

Peyton another great cover! I have to admit I never actually listened to the lyrics of this song and now I'm paying a bit more attention 🙂

Nicely played and your voice fits this style of song very well. I found the lyrics a bit confusing (but I've heard that's the case with many songs by L Cohen).

It's funny but I can usually be get a pretty good feel for what LC is saying. In the case of this song one thing one might need to know is that "going clear" is a scientology term. Apparently whomever he was singing about was into scientology. At least that is my take on it.

And now I'm googling about this song, I had never read the lyrics before either, but holy cow.

So, @Peyton do you take requests? Would you consider doing "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel? This is another one that just breaks my heart whenever I hear it. I actually just both a solo piano arrangement of that, but I would love to hear you sing it! 🙂

ShiroKuro Wow back, thanks, no one has ever asked me for a request! 🙂 That could be a tough one.... he is an amazing pianist and singer. A tough act to follow so to speak. Right now I have another Cohen song (Chelsea Hotel), A tracy Chapman (3000 Miles), a UB 40 (Red, Red Wine), a Fine Young Cannibals (Good Thing) and a Nick Cave (Do you Love Me) on the burner. But I'll take a listen.

Is this the first time you’ve heard it? I was a huge (huge!) fan of Billy Joel when I was a kid, but by the time this song came out, I was listening to other things and I don’t think I heard it until after I had started playing piano. Ot maybe I heard it and I was too young to appreciate it? 😅 (this song was released in 1989 I believe, at that time I think I was listening to punk and electronic dance music! 😃

ShiroKuro I have to say... I was never a Billy Joel fan. I was (and still am) a fan of progressive rock like ELP, King Crimson and Yes. Keyboardests like Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson were my idols. For song writers, obviously L. Cohen who will always be my favorite, Tom Waits , Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson and more recently Nick Cave and Tracy Chapman stand out. Favorite overall band would probably have to be the Beatles. When Billy Joel came out with that classical record I stood up and took notice. I do remember being impressed by his bar creds and a song like Piano Man. Mostly just jealosy on my part... 🙂 I would cut off a little toe to play like he does.

Yes, I love his classical compositions! I also love Elvis Costello!

And the Beatles! One of the first songs I ever performed in a recital was Let It Be, I sang and did the piano part as well. I have a really nice collection of Beatles tunes in very nicely done solo piano arrangements. It's been years since I've looked at that.... hmmm. 🙂
