AUGUST 21 UPDATE: we are currently voting on the jazz piece for PIYW #3. In addition, we have made the following decisions about future PIYWs:
- In the past, PIYW pieces have been announced a month in advance of when the submissions go live. But from now on, the announcement will be made two months in advance.
- the genre of the PIYW pieces selected will be based on a schedule, to ensure we get a good variety. Within the genre, the piece will be selected using group discussion. For PIYW #3, the genre is jazz.
The next Play It Your Way is due to be announced in just a few weeks, but the suggestion box is empty, except for one blues tune that I don't want to use because we recently did a blues! I certainly don't mind picking a song myself, but WieWaldi said he preferred to discuss the choice as a group, and hearing no other feedback, we are going to go with his suggestion!
So far we have done: 1. Blues (Beale Street Blues), 2. Classical(?) (Pachelbel's Canon).
I hesitate to count Pachelbel's canon in the classical category because so many classical players don't want to play it. It seems to me to appeal more to new age players. I make this point because I think another classical tune soon is very reasonable. Here are genres and example pieces that I think might be good for September/October:
Jazz: Autumn Leaves, Watermelon Man
Oldies: Isn't She Lovely, The Long and Winding Road
Contemporary(ish): Just The Two Of Us, Lose Control
Ragtime: anything by Joplin
Animation/Video Games: Daisies (from Hazbin Hotel), Undertale Spider Dance
Classical (beginner pieces for which there are no advanced versions): Haydn Minuet, Couperin-The Benevolent Cuckoos
Classical (intermediate to advanced, not sure if simplified versions exist): Bach Little Prelude in C, Fannie Hensel - Melodie
Classical (all levels): Elgar Salut d'Amour, Debussy Arabesque
PS. Feel free to submit ideas to the suggestion box!
