I think one problem is that this particular detail (the octave position numbers) was not contextualized in any way -- i.e., why is this a helpful thing to know. Comments above from @twocats and @keystring actually help more in that regard. I think the first unit is sort of like "these are all the things you need to know to be able to read musical notation," without putting any of it in context. But I already know how to read, and although I've always know (somehow) that middle C is C4, I didn't realize that the B below middle C is B3, nor did I know that the bottom two notes are 0 (zero) not 1.... So I got very frustrated, especially because there's this online portal with exercises that you have to get through before you can move on, and I got in this ridiculous loop in the octave position number part. Anyway, we'll see what's on tap for today.
The other thing that's frustrating me is that the teacher hasn't posted assignments past today, and I'd like to get an idea of what I should be doing, for example, I'd like to read the material one day, and then do the assignments the next day. But you can't do that if you only know what's due today.... And although everyone else in the class appears to be undergrads, I'm a grown up and I do also have work I'm supposed to be doing, even though I don't teach in the summer... So that was frustrating me yesterday as well...
@pianoloverus your comment is not very helpful. For one thing, I already know the basics, mostly (excluding this octave number, which is now tattooed on the back of my eyeballs).... I'm taking this course because I want to know more than the basics, like chord theory and so on, but I (obviously) have lots of holes in what I know at the moment, so I need to start with the intro course and I need to start at the beginning.
And, I'll be coming here to vent as much as anything else, so please cooperate! π
