On necessary versus unnecessary.... chocolate chip cookies are unnecessary too, but that never stops people (myself included) from buying them. Don't worry what people think.
Rr are you @Pallas "grand piano person," and WieWaldi's comment here:
WieWaldi Your interest can change within the next 2 years and if you lose interest in piano-playing, it would be a pity to have one room filled with a grand.
I started playing piano at age 30. I had also just gotten married. Someone had lent me a good quality digital (the kind without an attached stand, a Yamaha stage piano with weighted keys). We had been married for barely 3 months, and I had maybe been playing piano for 4 months.
I told Mr. SK that I wanted to buy my own digital piano (since I needed to return the loaner). He thoughtfully said "well, if you think you'll play it, then sure, let's go shopping. But if you don't play it, it will just take up space in the room, like a big pile of garage." I recognized that he had a point. 😃
Anyway, I said "yes, I'll keep playing" and off we went to buy a digital piano. Fast forward a year and I said to Mr SK "you know, I really, really want an acoustic piano." I expected another "well, if you don't play it..." talk. But all he said "ok, that makes sense."
😃
He had seen me practicing and playing that whole year and no longer had any doubts. It's now been 25 years since that first digital piano purchase. For all of my subsequent piano purchases since then (and there have been more than usual because we moved countries and I was in grad school for awhile etc), he mostly just nods and asks me where the dealer's shop is.
This is thread drift, but if there is one connection, it's to @WieWaldi 's point about how long someone has been playing.... I don't think there's any hard fast number of months/years one has to wait, but the person should feel pretty confident that they'll keep playing.
