Swallowtail Thank you for asking!
The show was incredible. There was the thundering, howling bagpipe war procession, and Loire Cotler's unearthly voice in the Dune suite. The boneshaking bass in Dark Knight was the biggest I'd ever felt; it was so deep it wasn't even wholly a sound, it was like my molecules were shaking apart - wild! In the Interstellar Suite, there was a duet between a violin and a woman with the most incredible range, that just spiraled up and up and up. Then there was Lisa Gerrard singing her made-up language in a vibrating 3-octave contralto in the Gladiator Suite. That absolute maniac genius, Pedro Eustache, playing the Armenian duduk, as well as at least two instruments he invented. The voice of the Lion King, Lebo M, singing high above the ensemble in Zulu. I spent most of the concert with my mouth hanging open. Then there was the sound engineering, and the most spectacular light design, and Zimmer's lively, passionate, completely engaged, bountiful love directed at everyone like a firehose. It was magnificent.
Hans Zimmer tells little stories between sets, introducing members of his band from suite to suite. He seems in love with each one of them. His orchestra hails from Ukraine, and Wonder Woman was a tribute to the women fighting to defend their country. Most of the percussionists were women, including the two rock drummers who held the whole show together from a dais center stage. Bagpipes, bells, french horns, an absolutely manic acoustic cello section, a 6-string bassist, a virtuoso on electric guitar, 2 electric cellos that looked like bedazzled crossbows, African drums, I'm running out of nouns. It was absolutely astonishing.
Boston gave them 3 standing ovations. I shouted myself hoarse. My husband woke up this morning with a headache but no regret. 😃 We should probably wear protective ear-wear next time. Apparently, Hans Zimmer comes to Boston every five years or so, but that's just something we heard from a fellow fan. We bought concert T's and a CD recording of the live show. Incredible.
