pseudonym58 you do actually have a local person now, don't you?
Yes! And my piano sounds so, so much better under his care!!!
Seeker I would be specific about what didn't work in the tuning for you and that I am giving him this information as constructive criticism of his work. What he does with that critique is up to him. Best case, you have helped him identify a weakness in his work and an opportunity to improve his tuning technique.
You know, normally I would agree with this, except for one thing: he never asked me how the tuning was. When he first tuned my piano (well, I only had him tune for me once), he left right away afterwards, pretty fast. He didn't say "let me know how it sounds" or "let me know if there are any problems." And he didn't say "why don't you play it before I leave" etc. And then, when I texted him yesterday, he didn't say something like "please let me know if there was anything about my tuning that didn't work for you."
So I never had the impression that he's interested in my preferences for the tuning, and I have no reason to think he's open to feedback.
I actually wrote about this on PW I believe when it first happened, but before tuning my piano, he told me that he prefers doing well-tempered tunings. (He had some line, it was clearly something he says all the time, about "all equal temperament tunings being the same, they're all equally bad" or something like that!) And not even that, he told me that he usually just does the tuning that way and doesn't tell the person, and, according to him, most people don't notice (he's probably right for all I know). He said he was telling me because based on our conversation, he thought I would want to know. (This was when he was installing the dampp chaser for me). So I told him "please give me your very best equal temperament tuning."
After he tuned my piano, I disliked it so much that I wondered if in fact it was an unequal temp. tuning. Eventually I decided it probably wasn't (it was just shimmery and horrible).
But anyway, my point is, I don't think he wants feedback from me or any of his clients. That's why I worked so hard to find a different tuner.
