Why invent something new like "Site Feedback"?
"Meta" was just fine in my opinion. Even if it sound ugly for some or unpleasant for others. I really would like to see a dedicated forum for organisational stuff. Tips and tricks. About forum rules and other serious stuff. Even if this gets less and less posts in the future, it will act as a reference book.

I know there are people here, wanting to have a place for smalltalk and other funny stuff. I am one of those. But I want it to have separated from the serious. The serious topics should not get spammed with small matter discussions. And I want to avoid that mods see the need to make the important threads sticky. This leads on the other hand to a hiding of the funny stuff.

I vote for both: Cafe and Meta

I agree there is a place for PT-related updates. Though it may not be the busiest subforum, it’s an important one. On PW, we couldn’t create new sub forums or “universal” messages such as spam/phishing warnings, so we had to go into each subforum manually and create a new sticky, we definitely missed a few.

This subforum could be a home for the many things we’re already seeing:
-site/hosting updates
-upcoming maintenance/downtime
-attack/malware warnings
-updated policies/rules/terms
-mod changes
-feature requests
-new feature announcements
-new subforum discussions, renaming
-site milestone announcements
-anything about the site that should be broader than just a specific subforum.

Etc. It seems handy to have a place for these things.

Animisha Yes, right. In your Profile, click Controls and then select Cover... like you said 2MB is the limit but that is actually plenty! Try it and see what works.

It's also not necessary. Although I am sometimes frugal e.g. I realized after the fact that if I had used a referral link, I could have received €20 free credit on Hetzner 😫... it's certainly not a hardship. I'm still really impressed at the value for money we're getting here.

Maybe in the future, years from now... ~~I'll plaster every pixel with lucrative ads (just joking!)~~ we can go the community-funded route. 🙂

I think we can strike a balance. We can keep the off-topic friendly conversations where there are i.e. wherever people feel the most affinity and provide an "Off-topic" tag, similar to the "Internal" one that we have.

Tangential threads about music, art and such should be perfectly fine on PT. Occasional friendly off-topic is OK but rowdy topics (like politics) are out of scope for PT.

The paraphernalia thread is just great!

I'm not convinced that an off-topic cafe would be bad. Whatever happened on PW was a long time ago, and with a different mix of people. With the people currently on PT, I don't foresee any problems with an off-topic area (though I would certainly understand wanting to put limits, such as keeping topics music related).

The name "Meta" for official announcements/PianoTell discussion appeals to me. The fact that Facebook somehow trademarked it shouldn't take away from the word's rich history.
(EDIT: I see you changed the name to "Piano|Tell - Hall". I like that name too!)

FrankCox Hi Frank, I personally don't mind at all, though it would be nice if you used the "off-topic" tag with those posts. (I'm a mod... I guess I could add them myself!) Based on what Navindra stated when he first created the off-topic tag (navindra), I think he'd be fine with your stories. So far Pianotell has only one official rule, and that is to be nice to each other. And you have certainly been doing that.

My own lack of response to your stories is simply I haven't had time to read any. I'm not irritated or otherwise upset that you have posted them here. As a fellow creator of art, I know how hard it is to put up your work for public criticism.

It's nice to see other aspects of the lives of the users here, whether it's posting your fiction or photos of pets. Good luck with your piano-playing and your writing!

@navindra I didn’t mind the ‘meta’ label - actually I kind of liked it. But I see how the name might feel a bit strange to some. The current ‘about’ makes me want to start listing off prepositions. Sometime in grade school I had to memorize prepositions, and the list started with ‘about, above …” Anyways, I’m probably the only one who gets thrown back to grammar class. It’s a reasonable/descriptive enough name for the kinds of threads that will be posted in it.

I added an Off-topic tag. How's that for a compromise? So friendly off-topic conversations can live anywhere people feel the most affinity and can be ignored if desired (once I find the extension for that).

A primary reason for the existence of PC is off-topic, they are willing to accept anything. I viewed some of the other off-topic forums that forked off of PW and I think we should take a bit more of a cautious approach. Those forums are already serving the purpose well.

If this forum stays friendly and there is a strong demand for off-topic from this particular set of folks, we can re-open the Café?

I agree! And if it does get out of hand, it could be dealt with then. But there will be some off-topic discussions from time to time and it would be nice to have an obvious place to put them.
