Yikes...that does give me something to think about. Often I'm sitting right in front of the trumpets. That's unpleasant for multiple reasons, but I hadn't considered the idea that they could literally break my ears. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I know... We've probably all heard about ear damages caused by explosions and such, and also about the deterioration of hearing and increase of tinnitus over time in loud environments, but this? No, I had no idea either before it happened to me.

I played tenor sax in the high school band, not because I particularly liked band, but was just sort of on auto-pilot scholastically. At the same time, I played in some very popular local rock bands, mostly with older guys. I was a brat, with a big ego. In the high school stage band (some schools call it jazz band) I was pretty much the go to soloist, and because of that I was able to ditch all parades, football games, and pep rallies. Did I mention I was a brat?

Not in a band per se, but I have been the accompanist in a number of amateur jam sessions.

Being in a band is a commitment, one that I don't feel like I have the time or energy for at the moment. Maybe piano for me in its purest form is also something where I'm allowed to be myself and don't have to bend to the whims of others.

ranjit That's definitely why I took up piano, I wanted to be able to make music on my own. I missed the band thing after a while, but our current trio is me, my spouse, and a good friend, and we're keeping it very casual, so that takes the pressure off.

I've been playing in bands since the late 1980s. The first band I ever played was "The Sheds Jackson Trio" a Jazz trio consisting of Piano, bass and drums. Over the decades I've been lucky enough to play some decent gigs, perhaps most memorably playing in a band that was the support act for Buddy Whittington (an American blues guitarist). The gig was played at the Mick Jagger Centre (Kent, UK), not a huge venue, but nevertheless we were supporting a professional act, and it felt good! In fact my avatar picture was taken at that gig, back in 2010.

Although I returned to serious classical playing in late 2022 and am working towards my ABRSM grade 8, I still play in a rock/pop band, where I actually play more drums than keyboards. I shall probably do more gigs this year, with that band, than I have in more than a decade. I also attend a regular rock/pop jam session every fortnight and in theory rehearse with an amateur big band once a fortnight, but this seems to be on the wane.

I'm very lucky to have my own rehearsal space at the bottom of my garden. Tonight I'm hosting a monthly Jazz jam I have in it with a few friends. Over the years it's been used on a regular basis to play with quite a few different combinations of musicians/friends.

So the short answer to your question is yes 🙂
