About a year ago I wrote on the PW board about my rock-and-roll bird, who died after fourteen years of being a generally wonderful little guy who was always interested in whatever was going on, especially if it involved music and sounds.
Shortly after I lost him I got a new bird and for the first time in over sixty years of being the guardian/protector/caretaker of a bird this time I got a hen. I've always had male birds in the past so this is a different experience.
Syd has a different personality than any bird I've had previously. She's less aggressive but more demanding - when she decides that she wants something she wants it right now and she'll screech until she gets it. She also seems to quite brave. My rock-and-roller guy would immediately hide if anything changed in his environment and he would refuse to come out again until it was gone. Syd is curious about anything new. She'll still disappear but after a sufficient period of time passes to show that whatever it is is not dangerous she'll come over and see what this new thing might be.
For sound and music she's turning into a mimic, particularly for high pitched interesting sounds.
A car alarm went off near here a few weeks ago and she's been a little car alarm several times every day ever since.
When she sees me turn my piano on she's immediately interested. She has picked out a spot for best viewing when I'm playing, and she squawks at me and rushes over to that spot. When she's ready and in position she then does a little "chirp" to say that I can now begin.
She doesn't really dance but she tries to sing along with varying degrees of success. I played Go Down Moses a couple of days ago and she tried to sing along with that and found out that she can't sing bass. 🙂 Then she scolded me for playing something that she couldn't accompany.
My rocker guy wasn't a great singer but he could dance, especially the Twist and the Lambeth Walk. He just figured out how to do that on his own and sometimes he would dance until he was just completely worn out and dragging. Syd is a singer but she's not a dancer, at least not so far.
She's close to one year old now and she works on different sounds enough that I won't be surprised if she starts talking within the next few months.
I'm playing Challengers in my theatre this week and she can hear the movie from where she is so now she's started doing the pa-tok pa-tok sound of a tennis match.
