Repertoire Suggestions: Schubert

In an effort to expand my classical repertoire, it occurs to me that I've learned zero Schubert. Haven't really listened to much of his works either.

Any ideas for enjoyable early-mid intermediate works of his?

It would be helpful if you listed some of your recent repertoire because intermediate means different things to different people. But anyway here are a few suggestions.

Any of the Woolf's collections, like the one shown below, are often considered his easiest pieces although I don't think they're as rewarding as the ones I listed above.

That Sonata is gorgeous! Will look it up. (and did. tempo in the first and third movements likely will be the biggest challenge once the notes are under my fingers...) I don't really intend to perform it for anyone.

Thanks for reminding me of the Moment Musicaux! I won't do that one, but I'm looking at the one in C# minor Op 94, No 4. as it feels like more of an interesting exercise.

I also looked at his Ländler and Eccosaises collections. Very short all of them, but good for exercises.

I got the score for the Sonata and ...

I'm able to sight read the first and second movements both hands slowly not too many errors. The third movement with RH slowly.

That being said, I can sight read through things that would take a lot of effort to get presentable. Which puts the third movement out of bounds. Also, it doesn't draw me in as the other two movements.

I'll definitely put the Andante on my 'to learn' list. It is gorgeous. Behind that is the first movement. Someday.

It's funny. In some ways attempting such works is my personal version of a marathon. The process is private. One might have a few fans who will enjoy hearing the end result. And that's fine with me.

TulipAcid I'm glad you were so taken with the Andante from the A major Sonata, and it can certainly work well as a stand-alone piece. Based on your comments about about the A major sonata I think you are probably more advanced than I assumed based on your description, so there are lots of other Schubert pieces you could do. Here's one more I thought of that's probably well within your skill level and is quite popular:

So, it was good I asked and you responded! Hungarian melody is very nice! It immediately captivated me. I'll have to have another listen to Sonata 21...

For whatever reason, Schubert hadn't reached my Apple playlists, nor can I think of ANY Schubert that came up in lessons 'lo those eons ago. Nor very frequently in the orchestra concerts I've attended.

I think there was a Beethoven fad going on in the way back. I expressed disinterest (I don't do fads) and wound up with some Brahms and Khatchaturian (the easier ones.) My family liked the Brahms. Khatchaturian not so much ... so I played it for my brothers A LOT! ☠️ They loved me for it.

Another suggestion:

I can't think of another example where a composer has written a suite composed mostly of two- or three-line pieces.

The Ländler and Ecosaises are like that in terms of length. Perhaps not so difficult (in terms of octaves, though there are some...)
