I thought I'd start a thread for beginners looking for digital pianos and link any useful, non-spammy articles. So let's start with this one from Wirecutter (NY Times), dated February 2026:

Summary of the recommendations:
Top pick: Roland FP-10 (~$500)
Runner-up: Donner Oura S100 (~$400)

Models came out recently and weren't tested, but look promising: Kawaii ES60, Korg Liano Live, Alesis Prestige Artist

I like that the article includes a pretty thorough explanation of how the keyboards were evaluated. The article was written by an ex-musician in consultation with other pro pianists.

I never quite know how to feel about this site. In some ways it seems like one big ad: they "review" DPs but never really say anything too negative about them, and always with links to buy them from other sites (which I'm sure generates revenue for them). Having said that, the reviews are still fairly informative, and the article above can be helpful for someone just trying to wrap their heads around everything.

Merriam Music has some in depth comparisons of various digital pianos looking at the features that set each instrument apart from another. Generally focuses on the positive.

With all due respect, articles like that wirecutter review, written as a review of audio equipment, and not written by a trained pianist, are likely to miss the important issues.

There is no mention of things like how well the action supports playing with hands in the “near the fallboard” position, or whether treble sustain is adequate or whether the action is fast enough for playing trills with ease, or whether the sustain pedal supports proper pedal technique adequately.

sweelinck I don't think you can say it's written as a review of audio equipment. From the article:

Digging a little deeper, I found out that the author is a jazz bassist-guitarist.

EDIT: I see I posted while you were still editing! As to your other points, the article is titled "Best Budget Digital Pianos for Beginners". I can't say from the article whether they did or didn't evaluate the criteria you mention. But I feel pretty certain that, had the author written that level of detail, the editor would have said something like "That's too much detail for beginners. Just say that it has the feel of a real piano." Which is what the article does, with statements like:

It even simulates escapement, the feeling you get on an acoustic piano when the hammer drops away after striking the strings.

I did not find that the wirecutter article would have helped me very much, if at all in selecting one of those DPs, or recommending one them to a beginner. I gave some reasons in my posting.

If that is because the editor axed much of the critical info, so be it.

Actually, more info is worse for beginners. They are then asked to try to take a sip of water from a firehose, and they will not be able to distinguish the useful articles from the misleading ones.
