First I don't like people putting the label "Classical" music on over 1000 years of European music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic as if it's 1 style or genre of music. He mentioned Classical music being accessible to people who had the money to attend performances in concert halls. Historically not all music was performed in a concert hall. Haydn wrote many of his symphonies to be performed for private functions associated with the ruling family of Austria. Music wasn't just for the kings & nobles but in the earlier centuries of European music only the upper classes and people in the clergy (affliliated with the Catholic Church) could read and write so we get a lot of church music and music performed for the upper classes. Folk tunes were passed down by oral tradition but not written down until much later.
Classical music was not indigenous to America. The original English settlers brought European music with them. Classical music was a foreign import that is not native to the original people. Since the founding of America, a big group of enslaved people was excluded from education and opportunites. In the American south Jazz & Blues developed by oral tradition. It's a style of music developed & evolved in America initially as improvised music from a population mainly illeterate.
Teaching Classical music in group classes & private lessons is 1 thing. People in a place like America think of Classical music as European instead of having an universal appeal. People in America embrace music that evolve locally since there were no great American composers until the 19th century.
