Schubert Impromptu no 3 Op 90

I tried to learn this during the pandemic and never actually got it all the way up to speed. I used my Yamaha P515 and VSL Steinway D274 VST to record this. I had some trouble with some of the left-hand trills and hit some wrong notes. I had to stop playing this for a while because of shoulder problems. This is as far as I got sorry I don’t have a video. I think I recorded this in December 2022.

ShiroKuro Do you know if I can buy a PDF of that Henle version, without using the actual app?

I don't think so.
But the app is free and you could always delete it after exporting a PDF.
But keeping the app would let you adjust the staves, turn fingering on and off, etc.

Jane yea, I will probably do that, get the app and use it to access Henle pdfs, and then continue playing from forScore.

Back to @danno858 ’s original post… I “played” a bit of Impromptu last evening….Yep, it’s hard. I’m pretty confident I could play this … poorly. 😃 I think the big question is how to approach practicing it.

Oh and definitely I need a better score, I found it hard to read because the IMSLP version is just crammed onto the page.

I’ll talk with my teacher about it at next lesson and then decide… earlier I said I would wait to start in the fall, but I will have a new teacher in the fall (sadly), and I don’t know who (because of the way the music school works), so maybe I’ll at least do a little work on it with my current teacher (who is just soo good at guiding me into practicing more challenging pieces).

We’ll see, I have a lot on my practice menu at the moment…

ShiroKuro Sorry I'm late, but I would recommend this piece conditionally. It is tough to perform on an unfamiliar piano, but learning it is relatively simple. Getting the musicality to a high level is rather hard.

Thanks for the comments! Esp this one, which is my main concern, or the aspect that makes it truly challenging.

I do think I'll look at it with my teacher soon though (I still haven't decided whether to purchase a score somewhere or get the Henle app, I probably need to do that!)

ShiroKuro The middle notes need to be really quiet but still present while the 4 and 5 play a melody that needs great phrasing. The bass line also needs to be phrased well. So that's what's hard about the piece, but once you can do that it somewhat falls into place.

It's not a piece that you quickly learn. There are many challenges. It's length alone is a challenge - it took me some time to be able to play the entire piece without my hands getting too fatigued.
