navindra Amazon is not motivated to detect such things at
Nope, they literally don’t care. A big publisher like Hal Leonard does though, so I think the publishers do occasionally push to have the counterfeits taken down.
Gombessa now I also have to worry about whether the artist is actually getting due compensation when I buy sheet music?
It’s quite frustrating isn’t it!
For contemporary pianists like Ffrench or Einaudi, or even lesser known ones like Doug Hammer, you can check their websites (and of course check the product details within Amazon). So it’s not that difficulty to figure out which product is the legitimate one.
But it pushes that task of authenticity verification onto the consumer, when in my opinion, that is something Amazon ought to be doing.
A related but different problem relates to music publishing when the composer is not contemporary. If we want high quality scores, music that we purchase should be coming from companies like Schrimer, Boosey & Hawkes, Alfred’s, Peters… But I have to wonder how many score books there are on Amazon which are really just a collection someone made from free PDFs they downloaded from IMSLP. :/
The current state of the world is exhausting sometimes!
It certainly is. 🙁
