So, I live within driving distance of the little village of Żelazowa Wola where Chopin was born but I have never been there before. They have a small museum and they organize weekend concerts outside with some great pianists. Today David Khrikuli, a finalist of last year's Chopin competition, was playing. The weather was perfect and we had the perfect seats, just to the right of the stage so that he was facing us directly. Here is the live stream from the performance:
I have to say that hearing him live left a completely different impression from the Chopin competition. Maybe it's also the fact that this was outside and we were so close. It felt much more intimate, more like a small salon performance than a grand stage, and maybe that's how Chopin should be played.
