Thanks for all the comments everyone. For the record, I assumed the rates would be very different from one locale to another, but itās interesting to see the range.
I think @KevinM and @BartK might have the most surprisingly low rates though, especially since you both described an hour lesson.
@Greg_R are you in a more urban area?
@twocats rates in the $100 to $200 (USD) arenāt necessarily surprising to me, although that would absolutely be at the high end in this area. Also, if my teacherās rate was much higher, I probably wouldnāt do it, just given our family budget and the fact that I will go back to the uni program in August, so I donāt technically āneedā these summer lessons.
In any case, the winner definitely goes to @twocats /the Juilliard teacher! $800 an hour??! OMG! I have to say, that sounds like itās bordering on being unethical, not because of the rate itself, but because of people paying it thinking it will improve their chances of getting into Juilliard, yikes! So maybe the critical reaction to that rate is that the person is taking advantage of their position. An alternative explanation is that for someone who already has fulltime work in music (whether thatās performing or teaching or both), to do something in addition to that, it has to be worth their while, so I wonder if the super high rates are partly a reflection of that. Like, say they get X amount when performing, or their conservatory salary is X amount, and they set their rate in line with that. Also, an hourly rate like that discourages all but the most serious students from applying. So maybe itās just gatekeeping! š
Oh and to @twocats other point, I agree, I absolutely would not want to pay a high rate for a zoom lesson.
Although having said that, now Iām trying to remember what I paid for the different online lessons I took during Covid. Iāll have to see if I can figure it out, because I had three different teachers during that stretch (two jazz teachers who didnāt work out and one teacher who I absolutely loved. We had online lessons for over a year. The only reason I stopped lessons with him was because as Covid eased, he moved his lessons back to fully in-person and I didnāt live in the same city so I couldnāt continue.
