rogerch Thanks- yes, half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles, on the coast. I might ask your tech for some references around my area....trying to find someone I can trust with voicing etc.

Chopstick tool crossed by "Sugar Coater" tool.
Chopstick can be used without removing the action, how one needles is determined by the sound desired and the skill of the person wielding the tool.
Sugar coater is typically used over the crown of the hammer; it softens the tone SOME and rounds it out without diminishing volume in any way.

Seeker Thanks! I have not looked closely at the tool my tech uses. Maybe it's a chopstick like the one in your picture and he doesn't needle deeply, or maybe it's a chopstick with a much shorter needle. He's coming next month and I'll ask him.

Indeed! I wouldn’t want just anyone needling at my hammers! But I’ve been spoiled because I’ve been fortunate to have some very experienced and skilled techs (in two different parts of the world even). Three to be exact, and two of them are older than me and close to retirement, and the other one lives in Japan. :/

Slight thread drift, but whenever the topic of skilled piano techs comes up, I can’t help but think about how there are fewer and fewer young techs these days…
