ShiroKuro That is an interesting difference in perspective. I'd prefer to pay money to a company to do what I need than get something for "free" where the main purpose of the business I am using is to collect data about me, and anyone viewing the content I create. The world that creates disturbs me. I'd prefer to keep my chat here politics free, but this is the main motivation for why I want to minimise my use of google and therefore youtube. Mostly I do agree about subscriptions over purchasing, I don't like all this rent seeking behaviour I see everywhere, but in the case of video hosting and streaming I can see that whoever provides that service has ongoing costs so it bugs me less than rent seeking in other areas.
I have a copy of all my own content, so if and when Vimeo fails I still have everything.
As to self hosting, having retired from IT at the end of October, my brain honestly is very happy not to think about such things anymore. Perhaps it was because towards the end, it was just a hard slog with little of the joy that could be had when you solve a particularly gnarly problem, or design and build something of significance. I now have little motivation to dig into the technical details of how to setup self hosting.
I think this was one of the reasons why I paused playing piano, I was running out of mental resource after work and looking after my partner.
