Just back from a Hindu Holi festival. My first time. I could not help thinking of this thread with the music and the dancing. I suspect though that the rhythms are more complex than being able to break them down into macro and micro beats.

But interestingly you can still feel the beats in your body as you try to dance. You can really see the people who have been doing this for many years. The dancing with the rhythm is just so natural to some of the dancers.

I was very multi-coloured when I left.

Only half kidding! The thing about the concept of a micro beat is that there could be many, right?

So even with the most complex music, I feel like this idea should still help. In other words, there are beats that carry the pulse, and there are beats that don’t. Within the beats that don’t, those are melody notes, embellishments and other types of beats, but they would still all be “non pulse” beats.

@KevinM is there something in the music (and the dancing) you described that doesn’t fit this description?
