Hi everyone! I am a PhD student in Music Education at the University of South Florida.
Before starting my PhD, I taught piano online to older adults in China. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I witnessed the massive shift to online learning. I noticed that online lessons come with a unique set of trade-offs. On one hand, they offer incredible accessibility and convenience. On the other hand, we all know the technical challenges, such as audio latency or the difficulty of demonstrating physical techniques through a screen.
This observation sparked my curiosity: How do adult learners actually weigh these pros and cons? While there is plenty of research on children, the voice of the adult learner is often missing. I want to understand your perspective—whether the convenience outweighs the technical limitations for you, and what factors matter most to your satisfaction. That is why I came to the US to pursue this research. I want to fill this gap and help educators understand what adult students really need.

Even if you don't have time for the survey, I’d love to hear from you in the comments:
How did you find your current teacher or course? (Word of mouth? Google? Social media?)
If you know any other adult learners who might be interested, please feel free to share this post with them!
Thank you so much for your time and for supporting a junior researcher!
