iternabe thanks for posting this video!
I played this piece years ago (as in, more than 15 years ago), and I remember that what I had a really hard time with was the left hand, because it’s the same pattern throughout the whole piece and there’s no spot to close the hand or release tension. I had a really hard time because my hand was cramping. Although I can easily play an octave just in terms of the stretch, the middle notes in the LH part for this piece change the way you have to use your hand. I remember thinking that it would have been easier if my hand was just a little bit larger.
As I recall, eventually I managed to play in a relaxed way enough so that my left hand wasn’t cramping, but it never felt easy. So I wish he talked more about the left hand in his video. Probably because he himself and the video he was reacting to are both men with larger hands, the LH challenge didn’t occur to him to be much of an issue….
But I really like how he talks about the right hand, I thought he presented very nicely demonstrated examples across the piece.
Maybe I’ll put this piece on my list of pieces to work on in the summer, I’m curious to see whether I’d have similar LH problems or whether that part would be a non-issue….
The other Tiersen piece I just love is the waltz, maybe it’s called the Valse d’Amelie or something like that? ETA google tells me it’s called La Valse d’Amelie.
It might be nice to play those two together.. sounds like a good summer set…
