ranjit again with a super fun question!
So, how do you define âeffortâ? Also what counts as âflowâ?
Iâm not trying to be difficult (I promise!)
Iâm thinking of that popular phrase âwork smarter, not harder,â and, speaking of framing, I think thereâs a tendency to frame effort as a bad thing. Whereas I would say sometimes effort is needed, necessary, and helpful.
On the other hand, in the realm of âno pain, no gain,â putting aside the fact that too much (actual, physical) pain leads to injury, letâs just think about the mental âpainâ of working hard on something that feels difficult, how much âstruggleâ is necessary for progress to occur? Thinking here about the fact that if one always plays pieces that are easy, itâs not likely to progress to more difficult or advanced pieces. And sometimes, working on something that feels really hard is exactly the thing needed to progress. Which is evidenced when something that feel so hard starts to feel first do-able, and then downright easy. This may be one of the clearest signs we have of progress.
Or, maybe this isnât what youâre asking about at all?
Are you returning to the discussion of a flow state? In which case, I would ask, are âeffortâ and âflowâ incompatible?
Or am I conflating âeffortâ with âexertion/strainâ in a way that is different from what youâre thinking about?
