Oh no! This is my worst fear! Given that I’ve had tunings by experienced pros that I didn’t like, I’m pretty certain that I myself wouldn’t be able to tune any better. That, plus the fact that I barely have enough time to practice as it is, I don’t want to make keeping the piano in tune part of my job as well!
@twocats i seem to remember you thought you’d found someone good, did that person leave or were they not good?
When we first moved here, I had a tuning by a tuner connected to the music school on campus, so I had hope hopes but the resulting tuning was horrible.
Then I had a tuning by the unequal temperament guy, some of you might remember me talking about the “shimmery” tuning. That guy. I hated that.
After that I got connected to the retired head piano tech for the music school. He is AMAZING. I love how he tunes the piano, he’s also fast (having been in charge of over 500 pianos for 20-30 years, it’s not surprising).
But he’s probably over 65 years old and in the not too distant future, he’s going to retire. He’s already semi-retired, in that he retired from the university and he only takes one tuning job a day now.
I’m hoping that by then, the current uni tuner will be better and maybe become a better choice for me.
But ugh, I hate to think of it. This guy is so good, my piano sounds great and the tuning almost seems to last forever.
The dwindling numbers of piano tuners makes me very sad.
