Interesting and Funny Vids by Lord V

I recently watched an interesting video by Lord Vinheteiro, where he played extracts from his "Top 10 Most Difficult Pieces"; link attached: [ This man's playing is incredible, and it's interesting to note that when playing these pieces he does not do his trade mark habit of staring into the camera because he has to actually look at the keys and concentrate - that's how hard these pieces are! Here's the list: Heroic Polonaise - Chopin Grande Polonaise Brillant - Chopin Sonata for 2 Pianos - W Mozart Etude Op. 25 No. 11 Winter Wind - Chopin Revolutionary Etude - Chopin Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement - Beethoven Fantaisi Impromptu - Chopin Flight Of The Bumblebee - Rimski-Korsakow Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 - Liszt Campanella - Liszt 5 of the pieces are by Chopin, which pleased me as I love those pieces, although the video confirms my feeling that most of his work will probably lay far beyond my skill level for years forever. The Flight Of The Bumble Bee is also in the top 10, a piece that I can't abide listening to - it makes me feel ill! (But it does capture how annoying a fast moving bee can be when you're trying to remove it from your home!) What do you think of his choices? Are there other pieces that you would include on the list? I'd love to hear from anyone who has played these pieces (and if so, how long they took you to master). Anyway, for me this video is an inspiration.

that's an excellent point! I love that view actually. And when I can, that's how I record myself.

Ornstein I'd bet that's why most piano videos before them were done via sideview.

I think the side shot is more common just because it's lot easier to set up. At, imo the top down view is more of a hassle. But these days I have my tripod all set up in the right position, I just leave it standing in the guest room so all I have to do is carry it out there. I'm so lazy though that I still think it's a hassle!! 😅

Sophia Very true Sophia. That story about the tight rope performer is very sad. If I had been there I'd have noticed him, because I can't abide clowns. But thinking about it, Lord V does clown around at times - he's made videos wearing fancy dress outfits, using hammers and musical chicken toys, so he's not above doing whacky stuff to get a laugh. But even then he usually includes some impressive piano playing as well.

I've seen the many responses where people have challenged the choices for this top 10 list, so I did a quick search online to check the levels of these pieces in the ABRSM syllabus. Most of the pieces are grade 8, about 3 are regarded as diploma level and one is regarded as a virtuoso concert piece. There was no grade shown for Mozart's Sonata for 2 pianos - am I missing some widely known "in joke" about this piece? It looks tricky but even a beginner like me can see that it's not as difficult as the other 9 pieces (although if it was written for 2 but he's playing both parts at once that makes it doubly tricky).

Has anyone here played all 10 of these pieces? If so, colour me impressed. 🙂

Ornstein I think a big part of Roussea/Kassia is they identified a general preference for the Topdown perspective.

I think rather than audience preference for top-down view being the key insight, it's the DDR-style light tracks (for which only the top-down keyboard view makes sense) that they identified and cornered the niche for. Without the light show, I think non-pianists probably tend to prefer being able to see the pianist's face (and emotions) as well as hands as they play — a performance isn't just the sound, after all (us pianists of course love the top-down view). Combine the light show with generally clean (certainly technically above my current level) if robotic playing so there's nothing really objectionable about it and you get a recipe for popularity.

I'll admit I find Lord V's list incredibly bemusing, but I can't really complain that there's an audience for something just because I'm not in the target audience or that I can't effectively target the same audience (c.f. cute girl cosplay piano niche).

TheBoringPianist I agree I think the flashy lights really took off and seems like everyone jumped on it. I personally don’t prefer it, as I also like a more traditional old-school view from the side. Just personal preference.

I’ve also done a POV cam view myself which does make it more motion-driven which doesn’t appeal to everyone. But I also think it’s one way to illustrate how pianists need to jump around and the micro-management (not really the right word but hope people understand what I mean) needed across the keyboard.

thepianoplayer416 SD is clearly a very skilful pianist, but when I watched his video I did not enjoy the manner of his presentation - the way he kept looking down and mumbling through a half closed mouth was not exactly engaging. I gave up about halfway through. The snippets he played looked very difficult and maybe advanced players would agree with his selection, but Lord V's videos are much more enjoyable and entertaining, so I will carry on watching his videos.

Nightowl Hahaha. He asked ChatCBT about the most difficult pieces. Some of them he knows, some of them he had to look up. Then he tried to find the difficult passages. Turned off after about 5 mins, probably one of the most boring videos I ever faced.

Nightowl I am a "yes" player. The "no" player was a touch of genius! 😂

Edit: I looked at some of my recordings to verify, and I found out I'm probably a "no" player more than I am "yes". And there's definitely some hunchback. Ugh, I'm going to be self-conscious about it now!

rsl12 I agree, the yes/no sequence was very clever. Lord V's humour makes me laugh out loud sometimes, but his playing is amazing too.

No need to be self conscious, you always look relaxed and confident when you play.🙂

sweelinck Well, it's all a bit subjective really, because different players have different strengths and weaknesses, so even advanced players might not agree on which pieces belong on that list. To me they all seem impossibly difficult but it's always entertaining watching Lord V's vids so I thought people might enjoy discussing it.

I hope people don't mind me resurrecting this thread to post another vid link, because it seemed a bit unnecessary to start another thread about Lord V.

I agree that there is subjectivity involved, but also I have in the past played the Ab Polonaise Op 53 (at tempo, from memory). On the other hand, there are pieces of Chopin that I find to be beyond my technical ability, and in some of the cases, it does not seem like just a subjective matter concerning my strengths and weaknesses.

rsl12 Thanks for sorting that. 🙂 I'm sure there are many other piano themed YT channels that might warrant their own threads, but probably not that many with so many subs. I think the broad mix of music, piano skills and humour appeals to pianists of all levels.
