Performer: rsl12 (USA). Piano has been a hobby for decades. First half of my piano life was focused on classical, but now I'm mostly into jazz.
Comment Policy: Critical Comments: Anything goes!
Source of music: My own arrangement. Improvised solo.
Recording method: Phone
Additional info: I spent a large portion of my practice studying a Wynton Kelly solo, but you won't hear much of his influence in this recording! It's been more than a year since I've tackled an honest-to-goodness jazz tune, and even longer since I've used walking bass. In this recording, my brain, occupied with the fundamentals of jazz, had no processing power for Wynton-inspired ideas.
To further excuse my mediocre solo, I spent the last week prioritizing the head over improv practice. The idea for the head came late, and my decision to use Drop 2 voicings greatly increased the amount of practice necessary. I find Drop 2 tricky to use even when it's arranged beforehand, and I'm in awe of those that can solo with them.
Regarding the bigger picture, I decided for a big melodramatic beginning. Maybe young romance gone to pieces, with the walking bass section representing reminiscences of better times. Maybe her name is Autumn, and our protagonist starts to fall when Autumn leaves.
