Navindra - is there a maximum lenth of time for the recording? If I were to record the entire Opus 109 (three movements) that would be 20 minutes. Im not going to record the whole thing. I"m just curious.

rsl12 Thank you! In Mauritius, this time, I'm actually being consumed by a whole other music project not involving the piano. So the one recording day that I have will be the last Sunday before the recital, when I'm already back in the US.

rsl12 All too true. That was probably the one and only ad-hoc recording I've ever done but I used a piece that I was already quite familiar with.

Schubertian2 There is no limit on the length of the recording, so feel free to use your best judgement! I think Sam had previously commented that you lose listeners beyond a certain length, but otherwise there are no restrictions.

Well, I guess the real question is whether or not there is a limit to the number of 'pieces' you submit. Since the Beethoven sonata is three movements that almost seems like three pieces, if you see what I mean. THe final movement has a theme and six variations - seven pieces.

Schubertian2 Funny seeing the Beethoven Sonata 30 mentioned, since I’m learning the first movement right now. I’d say each movement would kind of be its own piece for this environment. You could probably get away with doing 1 and 2 together, and the 3rd is definitely just one “thing”.

Schubertian2 Normally, I would say if the pieces are unrelated, then no, multiple submissions like that would not be in the spirit of this quarterly recital.

However, I think 3 movements of one sonata is acceptable given how tightly coupled these are — they are basically intended to be a complete work.

We have some precedence for submitting multiple related pieces here in the form of a YouTube playlist.

Schubertian2 I agree! I want it to be the first full sonata I learn (that isn’t a single movement). I’m a few months into the first movement, would be into the second as well if I had the means to print it out, and planning on learning the third movement next summer.

Cratersmash and another thing! Make sure you get a current edition which follows beethoven's manuscript. Wiener Urtext and Baerenreiter are both good (B does not have fingering and you need that, but it's still a really good edition with good notes)

well, if you like you are welcome to pick my brains on it. I'm certainly not the expert but I have figured out a few things. Also I have an excellent teacher who has been able to talk me out of the crazy ideas I used to have so now I think I know what I am doing.
Understand that Beentoven was EXTREMELY precise about what he wants. Try to dig into the score and question everything. What does he write this here? What does it mean? He always knows exactly what he wants.
Also, my teacher made the comment last lesson that Beethoven's piano music is always orchestral - whatever that means.

In Beethovan's time musicians ascribed to find positions in a ruler's court or get a wealthy patron who appreciated "chamber music." The way this was managed was to create a group of musicians on various instruments and play together. Thus most music of the era was orchestral

Ok I may have to switch to an easier piece, rather than the piece I was intending to record… dang it. 😅

I was planning to record this for the May recital, and it wasn’t ready so I switched pieces, and now I think it’s not going to be ready for August either. (Yes I was traveling for 3+ weeks in the middle there, so that did set me back a bit, but still…)

Maybe this means I need to adjust my characterization of this piece as being on the “outside edge” of my playing ability… like, it’s probably beyond my playing ability? 🤪

Not ready to submit, but I did a practice recording on Wednesday — of the harder piece which I said above wouldn’t be ready. Now I actually think it might be…. Maybe 😅. But that’s the piece I’ll aim for.

My tuner is coming on the 11th, so the other question is whether I wait until after he comes to try to get a recording… the 11th is a Monday so that makes it risky to wait until after then, because that would mean there would only be weekdays left until the submission deadline….

Guess I should aim to have a recording before then (say by Sunday the 10th) to be on the safe side….

There's nothing like indecision to help to get something done, or not.
I jest, it's not a serious comment 🙂

I'm lucky in that regard, I just opened a Fake book this morning picked a tune, played it 2 or 3 times, and then hit record.
Job done, and rubbish no doubt!
