I don't know much about how the Franck piece is supposed to be played but her Saint-Saens etude-valse was way riskier than everyone is giving it credit for.
It's exclusively associated with the legendary Cortot recording which also great lore with Horowitz seeking him out to try and learn the secret of his double note technique. It literally is just that one recording. Imagine if you picked Liszt Grand Galop Chromatique, by selecting it you're making a statement and promise to exceed or at least match the Cziffra performance. So most people avoid idiosyncratic pieces like this Saint Saens piece or that galop or any number of similar pieces.
The emotions affect the listeners too. I was blown away by it in the livestream. But then relistening to the performance and Cortot's recording, back to back, the most technical section with the crazy double notes in the final minute, she did not get very close to his level and that's what the jury is waiting for.
I'll even say it's a little weird Ben didn't mention that as I can't imagine him not having this background bit of lore but maybe he has fuzzy memory on the Cortot recording (as, in fairness, I did before I double checked it. I listened to it many times over the years and still thought she outdid it before I did the back to back comparison).
Everyone always loves to jump on a robbery narrative, but they give zero outcry to more severe robberies. I did have her as a quarterfinalist and was surprised but in no way does this come anywhere close to Pogorelich. No video for Jiarui or Ryota? Ok Ben.
Also it might be a negative thing that I liked her Franck a lot. This is a pretty heavy German work that I never liked before hearing her play it. For me to have liked it might mean she played it too Romantically or something. This piece simply has a terrible track record a the Cliburn. They play it boringly/cerebrally, or more colorfully or a little more joy, result doesn't change. Similarly I thought Ryota and Pedros had amazing Mozart sonatas but that probably means the jury didn't like it.
