raagamuffin I’d like to avoid dust getting inside , so for short spontaneous playing, I’d like to keep the piano closed, with the ability to play from a sheet.. then for longer sessions, open it up ..
For daily practice, I fold back the fly lid and open up the music desk. (I rarely open the lid and put it on either the short or long stick.) When I'm done, I close it back up, and I never leave any part of it open when not in use.
I suspect once you get used to that process (opening the fly lid, setting up the stand, reversing the process at the end of practice time), it won't seem like a big deal.
I think maybe one thing that matters is what you want it to look when it's not in use, because I don't like to leave things on top of my piano. Also, if you do play to sometimes open it and sometimes not, then another question is whether you have space to store a portable/tabletop music stand nearby, because it would be in the way if you wanted to open the fly lid.
