Hi,

I was wondering what people's methods were for adding repeat dots to printed music when there are both vocal and piano staves and little room to add the double bar lines and dots.

Would you simply bracket the section to be repeated and avoid adding the dots, or would you place them elsewhere (say on the spaces between the staves)

Many thanks.

fata760 Can you share a screenshot of the measure where you want to add a repeat sign?

If I'm writing something by hand on the score, I generally smoosh it in however it will fit. 😅 So I'm having a hard time picturing what they problem for your score is.

Are you the only person who will read this score?

To share photos here, all you have to do is copy the photo and then paste it into the reply window. it's super easy! Here:

To your question, I think that looks totally fine. And if it were for my own purposes, I might not even write in the bars, especially since one of them goes over the "break" lyric.

Maybe I'm too casual though? Were you wanting something that looks more professional?

Yeah, looking for something a little more academic or professionally suitable.

It's not just for my own playing!

Thank you for the photo information - so much easier than PW it seems!

fata760 It's not just for my own playing!

Ahh, that makes sense. Although, ultimately, if it clearly communicates the musical direction, I think it should be fine. No one would misinterpret or overlook what you drew in.

But, having said that, if you want something that doesn't look drawn, maybe there's a score reader with preset annotation stamps? I think forScore has stamps, but I never use them.

Are you using an app like forScore?

Oh! Actually, I bet you could do it in MuseScore, but with the learning curve it might not be worth it unless you do this kind of thing regularly. Also, you might need the paid version, I'm not sure. If you're interested in MuseScore, you might make a thread with that in the title.

Re photo posting, yep, ease of sharing photos is one of the great things about PT!

fata760 Good readers (not me but those I've written for) will put up with any non-standard indicators providing they're clearly written and attention-catching, e.g. over the respective staves you could just write the word REPEAT with arrows extending left and right to indicate the range.
Incidentally, check out a free app called vFlat Scan. It will take a skewed perspective photo and flatten it with very little distortion.

I think you've forgotten my disdain for MuseScore ha! I just drew that quite rough in Forscore as an example to share, but yes would normally be much neater.

Hey! Good to see you here.

It's for students, who are being assessed and it's an area we haven't really covered as it's a device I use more than others. Yeah, I think the brackets are probably more key than the dots though. Thanks for the app recommendation. The music in the photo is a neat pdf but the angle of my iPad was weird 🫣

fata760 I think you've forgotten my disdain for MuseScore ha!

I had indeed! 😆 You won't get any push back from me on that front!

Personally, I think what you have is perfectly clear and it's fine to go with that. If you're concerned, confirm that they understand the meaning before starting.

Oh, wait, you said "being assessed" -- like a test? In which case maybe you don't want to tell them before hand, if score reading is part of the test?

Hmm, in that case I'm not sure but I think you need to use notation software....

If you can use some software to get an image of the brackets and dots, then super-impose it onto the existing score (C&P) maybe that would look more professional?

I think this is what I'll suggest is good practice!

                Looks good!

Put DC al Fine at the repeat bracket and then Fine at the end of the piece.

                Nothing else is needed.

Putting in a repeat sign in MuseScore is a no brainer. The left side of the screen you see Palettes with a lot of options. Open Barlines menu and the repeat is in it. Just drag it over the bar you want and release. The symbol would appear at the end of the bar. And the spacing would be adjusted accordingly. Just take a few seconds to drag & drop.

My post had nothing to do with Musescore.
