The first Poon video about sight reading is from 6 years ago. The Rachmaninoff one is from 7 years ago, and the Explaining sight reading video is from 4 years ago. So they are old enough that things could have changed considerably since those videos were made. Her sightreading in particular could be much improved.

For the UI series, I still think the pianists probably play through once or twice, then record. So I wouldn't call it strict sight reading, just very good reading.

@Stub The aim of the UI series is just to provide recordings of piano literature for pedagogical purposes, they don’t make any claims or even say anything about sight reading. We just got into a discussion of sight reading because we were speculating about how they managed to make 3000 videos in such a short about of time.

I know. I was just going back to what I said earlier in the thread: 🙂

Stub It has been around for a time. I listened to some pieces back when I was doing method books. It's kind of a no muss, no fuss presentation, which is fine for the purpose.

What I wondered was if they simply sat down and played the pieces, almost the equivalent of sightreading them, or if they did several takes. Probably some of both.

Regardless, I like how this thread shifted to sight reading. I’ve been reading about sight reading (in books and on these piano forums) for over 20 years now and I still learn new things about it.

I also think as my own playing (and sight reading) improves, the same kinds of advice hit different, if you know what I mean. And I see things that I didn’t notice before.
