Astor Piazzola's story fascinates me. You can read the highlights of it here: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Astor-Piazzolla. He was hugely talented, and whether he delighted in making traditionalists uncomfortable or was simply oblivious to how he did it I do not know. What I do know is that his music is vital, sensual, earthy, and to me, dare I say it, sexy. But then, the tango, or in this case the milonga, is not exactly chaste in its affect.
I do my best to imitate the sound of a bandoneon on the piano and to remain true to the spirit of the piece.
The Bechstein K8 is an interesting instrument for this piece. The bass has sounds almost like woodwinds at times, at least to my ears.
The tuning of the Bechstein for this recording is an experiment for me. I have tuned it to an unequal temperament called EBVT, a mean tone temperament espoused by a number of piano technicians and pianists as being more interesting, sweeter in some keys than an equal temperament, and spicy (read that as more discordant) in the more remote keys. In any case, thanks to Ron Koval, a Chicago piano technician for his help in setting up the custom offsets in my tuning program, and thanks to Hakki Bayka for his PiaTune tuning app.
The video for this recording was made with a Canon EOS-80D feeding through USB into OBS as a webcam. The audio comes from a Endora 2 capsule microphone feeding through USB to a venerable RME Fireface 800 audio interface then into OBS as an audio source. I have not used any noise reduction or other filters on the audio though I did widen the stereo image with a plugin: Izotope Ozone Imager Plus.
I hope you enjoy listening to this piece as much as I have enjoyed playing it.
