FrankCox Well, since you asked....
How would you feel if you hosted a writing forum and someone posted recordings of playing piano? I think it's appropriate to let forum members know you write, perhaps adding a link to your profile where people can find your work. Why not start a blog site to share or promote your writing? I have published a number of works and, for those who may be interested, it's just a matter of a few clicks from my profile to find them. Since you've already pointed out your stories have "nothing to do with pianos", I think it's question of taking a more professional approach to sharing your writing.

FrankCox I'm all for writers, novice or seasoned, to gain exposure, and, like I said, offering a link to your works is, not only appropriate, but informative. Many years ago I started writing prose because I grew tired of trying to tell a story in song format. I haven't made The New York Times best seller list, but I get royalty payments every month from the books I've published on Amazon. A friend of mine, who is a published writer, and has had at least one of his books turned into a movie, said having a blog or website and gaining exposure on social media is important in establishing credibility. I'm not on "social media" (other than this forum), but I do have a blog site (built and hosted for free on Wordpress.com). If you like writing, and want others to read it (which you obviously do, or you wouldn't have posted stories here), and want, or need, feedback, you should seek out writer's forums, or at least do the blog thing.

Navindra is a pretty easy going guy, and he's put a lot of time and effort, and his own money, to build this piano forum. And I think we should all respect the essence of what he has envisioned.

Pallas Professional approach as an aspiring writer, not how someone behaves or misbehaves on this forum. Navindra included OT threads in the design of this forum, and so far, it's all fair game, anyone can post whatever they want. My perspective is that submitting writings (non-piano related) on what is obviously meant to be a piano based forum may be technically acceptable as an Off Topic contribution, but comes off as being just a bit desperate, or perhaps insensitive, and lacks the poise of presenting ones self as a serious writer. My comments to Frank are offered as constructive. And your phrase of "smacked down" is both heavy handed and a misrepresentation of what I said.

FrankCox Frank, I'm just one person out of dozens on this forum, and it's not my forum, so my comments are hardly indicative of a consensus. In fact, at this point I'm sorry I said anything. If you feel comfortable posting something, then post it. You're not breaking any rules. If you're going to be a writer, you should become a little thicker-skinned with regard to comments. I just thought your stories (and you as a writer) would have more credibility in a place where a potential reader would expect to find a story. I haven't read them. Maybe they're great. I hope so. I don't think you should abandon this thread until you hear from more forum members, or Navindra.

FrankCox Hi Frank, I personally don't mind at all, though it would be nice if you used the "off-topic" tag with those posts. (I'm a mod... I guess I could add them myself!) Based on what Navindra stated when he first created the off-topic tag (navindra), I think he'd be fine with your stories. So far Pianotell has only one official rule, and that is to be nice to each other. And you have certainly been doing that.

My own lack of response to your stories is simply I haven't had time to read any. I'm not irritated or otherwise upset that you have posted them here. As a fellow creator of art, I know how hard it is to put up your work for public criticism.

It's nice to see other aspects of the lives of the users here, whether it's posting your fiction or photos of pets. Good luck with your piano-playing and your writing!

An off-topic section would be my preference, then have at it. There’s another music forum where one guy, apparently with the blessing of the owner (or maybe it is the owner), posts endless astronomy reports, endless, mixed right in with music topics. Yeah, seems pretty dysfunctional that way. OTOH, an excellent motorcycle forum has lots of OT channels, where anything from fishing to relationships to breadmaking, even rants, is welcome. Just in an OT section, then let er fly.

@FrankCox I'm well behind on catching up all the awesome discussions on PianoTell, so I've read at most one of your stories. If @rsl12 says you're not breaking any rules, then please feel at home here to post anything you feel comfortable with sharing.

I still want to create a personal space of some sort here for PianoTell members. This can be a forum where practice journals are shared and the OP owns the rules of engagement. It can be stories, art, creative endeavors. It can be music. Likely we would not welcome extreme OT which would go into controversial topics. We'll have to find a good balance.

I have to admit that personally I've felt like posting some OT stuff here but I've held myself back! So I'd like a safe place to share as much as anyone and I'd like to empower other PianoTell members as well.

In the mean time, feel free to do what works for you and take a look at the guidelines rsl12 posted above!
