Oh my goodness, so true. I was so happy when I finally finished Alfred! But I'm glad I persevered to get at least a basis to build further on.

I'm assuming you mean live performance, but I'd like to point out that we have several recital possibilities in this forum as well. It's not live, but you can submit a recording of your choice. It's very nice to both showcase your own progress, and see/hear what others have been busy with. As you can imagine, we have all levels, the ones who can play Rachmaninov with their eyes closed and the ones who struggle with toddler pieces - that's what makes it so exciting. I highly recommend it 🙂

Sophia It's very nice to both showcase your own progress, and see/hear what others have been busy with.

On that note, I just recorded a cold-turkey trial performance. I wanted to test how ready I was. And i'm not unhappy. I will post in a few moments.

Nightowl I think you're brave to perform in front of an audience, I've never attempted such a daring feat.

I must say it is very scary. I went a few times to that amateur piano gathering and played one time late after the planned performance was done and a lot already went home. After I played one of the teachers walked to me and said "This is something you should play next time!". It gave me enough courage and motivation to do it. It helps that everyone there plays piano and know that performance is a whole other game.

JustinVG Welcome to the forum, it's great to have another beginner here. I learned using the Alfred's All In One Piano Course books and although some of the pieces are quite dire, they all helped me to build basic skills, so although I grumbled about them at times I know the system works.

JustinVG I am always extra hesitant to share my progress when the general user has 40+ years of experience and plays Rachmaninoff with their eyes closed.

I know exactly what you mean JustinVG - even in the world of amateur players there are many advanced players and it can make a beginner self conscious, but I think you're brave to perform in front of an audience, I've never attempted such a daring feat.

JustinVG I missed your self-intro post when you first made it, but let me say again welcome!

I owned a Petrof upright for a few years (before getting my current piano, which is Yamaha C2 grand). The Petrof I had also had a really nice tone, there was something very unique about it, and its voice was what made me want to buy it. (I hope its current owner is taking good care of it!)

Anyway, I'm glad you found PT! 🙂

I fell in love with the tone with the P 118, it had a super warm tone, no idea how they do that with such a small upright. But the issue I had with the 118 is that the highs were also warm and not that clear. I was afraid that I would grow out of it when I would have a few years of experience. So I choose the next step, a P 125.

A grand is awesome, but who has the space 🥲

JustinVG My Petrof was a P115, so not the same instrument. But I went from a beat up old Baldwin to that and it was wonderful.

When I first started learning piano (I started as an adult), I never thought I'd be able to have an acoustic instrument. When I got my first acoustic upright, I never thought I'd have a grand. But now, 20+ years later after first starting piano, here I am. So, never say never I guess!

I had a Petrof 125 and I loved it! It had such a beautiful sweet tone. Eventually I had to say goodbye to upgrade to a grand. But it's such a lovely upright.

What finish do you have? Mine was a gorgeous flame mahogany!

I really wanted the Walnut or Mahagony but that would mean I needed to order it from Petrof directly without the change of playing it. I was warned by multiple people that is a big risk, buy without the change of playing. So I have a Black one. Although it is the only high gloss black furniture in our house, the sound is why I bought it.

Little story: in the store they also had a beautiful Walnut upright Bösendorfer. But it wouldn’t sell. The store told me they were going to change it to a black finish to sell 😢 it was a little too lange and above my budget for my first piano (35.000 euro I thought to remember).

Noooooooooo!! Those cases are made by woodworking artisans at the factory. That's such a travesty.
